I maintain Hughesnet systems as part of my job - I don't sell or install them.
On the consumer systems I normally see speeds ranging from 800 to 1500 kbps on a well installed, properly operating system. There is a latency in satellite due to the mileage the data has to travel because of this streaming a PS3 or XBox will not work. For normal browsing, updating, downloading and most VPN stuff they are fine.
The only other thing is they do have a Fair Access Policy so you can't download too much in a day - the limit varies by package and once you hit the FAP limit, they cut your speed down. Last I checked the FAP limit was in effect from 5am until 2am but between 2-5am it is lifted since this is normally a low usage period. The only complaint I have received about the FAP was from somebody trying to download a series of training videos for ambulance/EMS stuff and they kept getting slowed down and it took a long time to get everything downloaded.
Don't have it installed and expect cable/DSL speeds you won't get them, but it is a good system for internet in the boondocks.
