anyone have it? i am seriously thinking about getting it. i can only have dial up, or use my cell phone, to have access to the net. i want faster net speeds, but dont' really have alot to spend. im spending $60 a month right now and these are my speeds

anyone have any other options i can look at? i live in the middle of nowhere, so my options on limited, i know.

Try this place, or use google and search for "high speed internet providers"

Hughes is installing satellite at my business next week. I'll try running a speedtest to let you now how the speeds look.

I maintain Hughesnet systems as part of my job - I don't sell or install them.
On the consumer systems I normally see speeds ranging from 800 to 1500 kbps on a well installed, properly operating system. There is a latency in satellite due to the mileage the data has to travel because of this streaming a PS3 or XBox will not work. For normal browsing, updating, downloading and most VPN stuff they are fine.
The only other thing is they do have a Fair Access Policy so you can't download too much in a day - the limit varies by package and once you hit the FAP limit, they cut your speed down. Last I checked the FAP limit was in effect from 5am until 2am but between 2-5am it is lifted since this is normally a low usage period. The only complaint I have received about the FAP was from somebody trying to download a series of training videos for ambulance/EMS stuff and they kept getting slowed down and it took a long time to get everything downloaded.

Don't have it installed and expect cable/DSL speeds you won't get them, but it is a good system for internet in the boondocks.

...and you won't have to wait for your porn

So, I've had consumer satellite and otherwise used them quite a bit in other environments. When I first moved into my current house it was the only option.

The speeds will make you much happier than dial up that's for sure. If you're just a normal web surfer I think the satellite Internet connection will make you giddy if installed properly.

The problem with satellite is latency. If you don't know what latency is, google it. It is physically impossible for there not to be latency with satellites - with technology in our lifetime. This latency poses a problem with online games that require low latency. FPSs...etc

Testing amongst friends and I indicate that satellite internet is even okay for VOIP. There will be higher delays in the voice conversation (due to latency) but there was no packet loss so the conversations were smooth. This was on satellite system for a city and it did not have that much bandwidth.

Take care,

I am upgrading my internet stuff and will have the WildBlue stuff for sale next week . It works fine and you can speeds up to 1500 depending on the service you buy . We had around 980 or so . If you have your own equipment , there are no contracts .

Shoot me a PM if you are interested in it . I will provide the dish , mount , modem and both cables .

There is mine...and it is hughes net. Better then dail up but not the greatest. The FAP is horrible though. I only get 200Mb in a 24 hour period before they start cutting my speed back.
