When you say it "works" are you saying - "It should work" but when i move it, it stays in the middle?

is this your problem?

1) you started you computer up.
2) your mouse is optical and it lights up when the computer is on.
3) windows starts, your cursor on the screen does not move.

if so...

1) wait for windows to start up
2) unplug your mouse (usb)
3) plug it back in
4) wait like 3 or 4 seconds for windows to recognize it again
5) move mouse

it happens to me occasionally where windows won't recognize the mouse and it still gets power from usb.

When was the last time you restarted your PC? That doesnt make sense to have the "pointer" stay stationary but your still able to move and highlight icons, etc..
