Iphone's new 3G...

Will this be a firmware update or a hardware update for exsisting phones? If it's a firmware update, will I have the choice of accepting it or not?

Just curious if anyone on here knows. I don't know if the 3G network has made any improvements in the last year. But when I had it, I hated it. Too many dropped calls. I'd like to avoid it for now, if possible.

Thanks,
Nick

Existing phones will still be on the edge network. Only the ones coming out in a month will be 3g. We do get the firmware update though that is opening up the phone for 3rd party software and some other cool stuff.

No, I believe that is a hardware thing and only included on the new phones.

Yeah 3G is actual hardware so 1G iphones wont be able to get it.

With that said I thought 3G was data only so would dropped calls be related to that?

3G is an entirely new network. Calls and data are transfered through 3G.
When I had my 8525, it was on the 3G network. Dropped probably 10 calls per day. Cingular claimed it was because there are not enough 3G towers in the Dallas area. And when you switch from a 3G tower to the Edge tower, it would drop your call.

I read on a Iphone website that they still wont have the 3g network setup yet, so when you buy a new iphone you wont be able to use the 3g network.

IDK if I want to get rid of my Sprint Mogul to get the new iphone. I fuc*ing hate this phone.

They have actually made the iphone more expensive over two years than with the original iphone just in the increased price in the plan you have to get. Just another gimmick that everything assumes they "need".
