Creating a backup of my DVDs

I am looking for a way to create a backup of a few of the DVDs that i own. Some are scratched and i would really feel better if i just made a new copy. But unfortunatly the copy protection is in the way. This is not against the law as long as i am the owner of the DVD (and i am) and i only create 1 backup. Can anyone suggest a free program that i can download that will do the job? I am looking for something real simple to use that will spit out a playable disc for me that i can just pop into a DVD player and use. But again, it has to be able to bypass copy protection. I have already tried with the standard WMP and such and it wont work.

no seriously tho.

Use dvd shrink and anydvd. anydvd defeats 99.9999 of copyright protections out there. including bluray and hddvd. DvdShrink is easy to use. There are some others but shrink is VERY user friendly.

and if you don't have a good dvd burner, i would highly suggest the...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827129018

along with these type of dvd media, Verbatim. They make some of the BEST discs out there.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817507003

If you want to step it up further, you can burn Dvd+R DL (dual layer) dvds and that will be a 1:1 copy from your "owned" dvd collection

So is AnyDVD better than DVD Decryptor? What makes it so?

DVD Decryptor doesn't say it will do ANY DVD, AnyDVD does, so it is better since it can do Any DVD.

They've done studies you know.... 60% of the time, it works every time

AnyDVD defeats all copyright protection. Decryptor defeats lke 70 percent of copyright. you can run anyDVD in the background. it acutally just runs in the background and on the fly decrypts the dvd/hddvd/bluray/vagina.

DVDShrink rips as well? I'll have to check out AnyDVD although being a recent user of Decryptor I've yet to have it fail on me.

On a side note, I've been using Mac The Ripper and Handbrake (for Mac of course) and I've on a few occasions had it fail to rip. Other than that those are some great Freeware options for Mac users.

...

I've been using DVDFab for a long time and it works pretty good. My problem lately is with burning the DVD's.. I never got a coaster with my old machine. My Mb or CPU died and I built a new, faster one. I used the same OS, same DVD burner, the same blank media and same version of DFab. Now, I get more coasters than I do good burns. I set the software to burn at the slowest speed and enabled DMA. It helped but didn't cure the problem. Anybody have any ideas?

I've heard this as well. I guess I've just been lucky so far, as I haven't had any problems with the 40 or 50 DVDs that I've copied with DVD Shrink

I use dvdshrink to make an ISO of the DVD I want to back up and then I use gnomebaker to burn the ISO to a disc. Has worked for me just fine for the past couple of years.

I downloaded Bittorrent from this page: http://www.bittorrent.com/?client=bittorrent6030

I have to admit i have never used it before. I am only used to limwire. How would i look for a certain program? Im afraid i am a torrent noob.

Also i wanted to ask if anyone has ever experienced a quality issue. From reading this thread it seems like it is possible to burn a DVD, but have a reduction in picture quality or something like that when watching the new DVD.

depends on the dvd...if you are trying to burn a dual layer onto a single, then obviously you have to cram it down to 4.2gb. A dual layer is up to 8.5gb. I highly doubt you will ever notice the difference.

There are numerous websites you can go to download torrents, hell you can even Google what you want and add "torrent" to the search and you'll find what you what. When you find the torrent you are looking for it should have a link that brings up your torrent client and begins the download process.

i used btjunkie and i figured out how to get it all going after i wiki'd bittorrent. i downloaded anydvd but i can not seem to find where it went. It did not create a setup on the desktop like i am used to. Any idea where it went?

EDIT: Found out they go to the default downloads folder in my documents. As a trial and error test i downloaded that new Narnia movie so i could see if it would really work. Well the sound was all there, but no video lol. Anyway, I guess i got a piece of shit anydvd copy cause the first thing it said was the trial period has expired. Can you confirm a good torrent on the btjunkie site for anydvd?

Yeah i was thinking it might be a codec thing. I had hoped that K-lite was complete but i guess it was missing some. It says its .avi so you would think it would work

"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card."

SO i updated my video card drivers and now they are from 5/12/2008. I still get the same message when trying to use WMP, but from VLC and GOM i get no message, i just have audio and no video. Any other thoughts on what this could be?

Just as a test i uninstalled my codec pack, and tried again. then i got this message "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."

So now i will try re installing klite mega codec pack and see what happens. How irritating. You would think they would sell this computer being able to play DVD's right off the bat.

Im not understanding why you need a codec outside what is already on the computer to play a DVD. WMP should play it just fine. You could try powerDVD (just dl it on bit torrent)

I dont understand it either. It is like they sold me the laptop incomplete or something. Cause they want you to think when you buy it that it will at least do what it says it will do. From now on if i buy anything off the shelf i will be testing this out first cause this is starting to piss me off.

And about the powerdvd, i downloaded it but i got 2 seperate things. I got an RAR file, and an ISO file. But i am afraid im too big a noob to know what to do with either of them. Windows just says it "cant find the program that created it, would i like to use the web service to find it."

Also, that little media player that JimD mentioned works, sorta. Its the one that comes with the K-lite package. It will play a DVD disc if i just let it do its thing, watch all previews, and dont fast forward. If i touch anything, it goes black again lol. I guess this computer was just never meant to play DVDs.

rar is like a zip file.

www.rarlab.com install WinRar and then right click the rar and hit extract.

Post what torrent you downloaded.

like M3x said above....use Winrar to extract the .rar file. Burn the iso file on a cd/dvd or there is a bit more complicated way using PowerISO or MagicISO. If you use Nero to burn, click Recorder, click Burn Image, then find your .iso file and burn. When its done, just pop it back in the cd/dvd drive and it should autoboot

Strange. I did like he said and got WINRAR, and the actual RAR file was "missing or corrupt" but it was able to use the ISO file and now i have powerdvd installed. I will try it now.

this is weird. I can play a dvd or something i downloaded as long as i have another different player open playing the same thing. One of the the players (regardless of which one) will be open, with a blank screen and only audio going. Then i open any other player and i can play the whole thing video audio and all. I dont get it.

If you use Nero to burn, click Recorder, click Burn Image, then find your .iso file and burn. When its done, just pop it back in the cd/dvd drive and it should autoboot

you can rightclick the ISO and hit extract and it will extract the iso into the folder saving a cdr and prob install 50x quicker.

You can also "mount" the cd using. http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/announcements.php , the computer will think it is in a cdrom drive.

LOL....How many times has this question been asked on this forum?

For the 50th time...Anydvd is one of the best background decrypters available. DVDFab HD Decrypter 4 is an excellent decrypter as well, but not compatible running simultaneously with Anydvd.

DVD Shrink is a discontinued encryption/authoring software. It will no longer decrypt newer discs, so it is primarily used as an authoring agent working in tandem with Anydvd.

A really good piece of software called Clone DVD is an awesome at authoring DVDs and is used in tandem with Anydvd. Clone DVD uses better compression technics than DVD Shrink. Anydvd won't decrypt certain discs and that's where you can use DVDFab HD Decrypter 4 to rip the disc into a folder then use Shrink or Clone to author the ripped .VOB files from the folder.

Someone needs to sticky one of these threads and label it as a "how to". About every two weeks someone is creating a new thread asking the exact same questions.

However, maybe that would make too much sense.

Carry on.

Oh one more thing i needed to ask, is anydvd an all in one type of deal? Can you use it alone to do the job, with just one dvd burner? Rip and burn?

Also, here is where i have been trying to download Anydvd from. http://btjunkie.org/search?q=AnyDVD

But none of them seem to work properly. They all say, "Use the registry tool to bypass the trial period, (or something like that) but as soon as you do it says "Your trial has ended" and you cant even access the program anymore. Do you happen to know of a torrent that works on its own? (@Hunt4m3x) There really isnt a keygen out there for it, i dont think this program even has a place to enter a key.

Anydvd is not an authoring program. It is just a background decrypter. You have to use something like DVD Shrink or CloneDVD to author the DVD.

Just download their trial version from their website. Good luck finding a key generator that actually works.

Well, you get 6 days with the torrent. I guess you can always just uninstall/reinstall every time it's up. Takes like 10 seconds so it's not like it's a big inconvenience. But it sounds like there should be an all in one. Is there an all in one that will do both?
