Is Vista really that bad?

I need a new laptop, and my options are VERY limited. Vista is all over the freaking place

Make sure you have a decent processor, enough RAM (at least 2 gb), and optomize your system (stop all of the shit running in the background on Vista...there are several programs out there that will do this for you) and it'll be just fine.

And if you're a gamer, DirectX10 is big, fantastic news that comes with Vista, so it's not really all bad.

Exactly ..I have been running it for almost 3 months now..and have not had a single problem have 3.5 gigs of ram....Once you tweak it it runs very stable..Have only had it lock up once on me...

Edit: also you can make it look just like XP.

To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus, and a clown killed my dad.

If you have any older programs that you simply must use, and the world would stop if you couldn't, research them and determine if they're either vista compatible, or if there is an alternative.
Even if there are older programs that you simply must use, and you can't find an alternative, just create a safe dual booting system, and be merry.
Vista is fine, works really well, and is stable-ish. It may take some getting used to, but in the end, it is designed to be more user friendly than any previous windows os.
You're definately going to want to disable UAC, or it'll drive you nuts, like over %50 of the users out there.

I dont like Vista personally. I have it on my laptop. It came with a gig of ram and it wasnt enough. 2 gigs still runs a bit slow. I personally would rather stick with XP simply becasue I know where shit is. Im not afraid of change but why change what works. They have had the same basic layout since 1995...dunno why they had to move shit around. Same with Office 07.

I actually tried to format a brand new laptop and go back to xp. Like they said above, there are some program compatibility issues so check into those. I personally would stick with the simplicity of XP. Vista offer nothing that XP doesnt for me. I dont need direct X 10 because I dont play much for games. I also dont need all the "pretty" things like the windows+tab functions, rounded edged programs, and stuff like that.

I've been using Vista for almost a year now and at first it took some getting use to, but i have learned to love it. There are quite a few features on it that i like over XP. I have 2.5gb of ram and have no problem with it running slow or locking up on me.

Are you using the Intel processor (Q6600)? I have this processor from HP on a ASUS mobo. Have you had any issues in performance when you game? I have always used a AMD was scared of change. Im a Intel virgin so not sure what to expect.

I've only been usig it for about a week and a half so I'm still learning with it. It's not so bad. The only issues so far are compatibility. I have an old Belkin bluetooth mouse that I really loved, but it's not compatible with Vista at all. I even called Belkin and they told me I was SOL. My roommate plugged in his Ipod before we downloaded Itunes and it wiped it out. Luckily, once we downloaded Itunes and plugged it back up everything was restored. Other than that, I'm just pissed that it didn't come with Office or Word or anything.

The only issue albeit it, enough to make me load XP back on is my current setup (quad 8gb ram 8800gtx) is the nvidia drivers constantly stop responding and make any games I have unplayable.

Now this problem is fairly common, most people don't experience it. I don't experience it on a few of my "older" rigs (nvidia chipset/amd setup) nor my laptop and they all have Nvidia cards.

My Vista experience consist of Vista Ultimate 64bit/32bit and i've been using it since RC1, if your not sure on whether to make the switch; Dual Boot it. Problems solved.

i've been running it since beta, and it arrived in my Action Pak. I love it, I don't even have an XP machine that I use anymore. I have plenty at work, but not personal.

Compatibility has pretty much been smoothed over for the most part, but there is a lot of stuff out there that's fairly old that will never be compatible, it's just not cost effective to the manufacturers, to make older versions work, when they can make you pay for an upgrade.

depends on the school... Vista Ultimate at UTA is like $21... And office is like $27

I'm not running vista, but its mainly due to having some compatibility issues with my graphics card on my desktop, and my laptop not having enough memory to run it well at all

UTA is just one of those schools that can offer students those deals. TCC and DCCCD dont do it.

Been running Vista for almost a year on a Dell XPS gaming rig with no issues. Running 2 GB RAM and haven't felt that I went wrong by not going with more RAM.

Isn't the new Service Pack supposed to help with battery drain issues with Laptops? Seems I read that somewhere. Anyway, I'm happy with Vista and have no desire to go back to XP. Matter of fact I'll probably be getting rid of my two XP Desktops because I want a new Vista box for my living room to hook up Media Center to my TV.

I can ask my cousin but yes, they check ID or something. He cant buy a crapload of programs and resell them. I think he can get one copy of each program per semester.
