Question Someone school me on wifi service

I've been in a couple of customer sites lately (i'm a contractor) where they will not let me plug my laptop into their network or use their internet connection. I'm tired of this (I need to be online for email and other reasons) and am looking at getting a wifi card to go into the laptop's pcmcia slot so I can bring my own internet access with me. I know you can also plug into a cel phone and that might be another option. I'm looking to get into this as cheap as possible. The phone I have now I don't believe is data capable, so if I went with the phone-as-modem deal i'd also have to get another phone.

My understanding is that at&t has the "slow" data network and verizon has the faster one.

What service should I look at, and what are their pricing plans? Does at&t cut deals with exiting customers?

dslreports.com has some pretty good info on this. From what I've seen, Sprint has about the fastest speed for the best price. It's also truly "unlimited", where as both AT&T and VZ has been getting burned for their ever-changing TOS around this.

I own a Spring PPC6700, I have the $25.00 a month unlimited EvDO plan. I just tether the phone into my laptop and tell the computer it is a modem and BAM I can get 921 kbps during peak times.

I used this as my home internet service and even played HL2 online with a ping of about 200 until I stopped being cheap and got RR lite...

Look into phones that can be used alternatively as a modem. PPC6800 was just released so the 6700s like mine are going to be cheap as the junkies try to unload them for the latest and greatest (I love my 6700)

I use my Nokia E70 (3G data) connected thru bluetooth on my laptop and connect at over 900kbps to access the internet wherever I want it. I pay 19 bucks a month for unlimited data access. This is thru ATT (formerly Cingular). Its almost as fast as my home DSL connection for most uses. I haven't found a location it wouldnt work at yet.

Bingo! Been doing this for a few years now, first with the slower EDGE connection and now with a 3G connection. Beats having to carry around "yet" another device and I always have my phone on me anyway.

Have you thought about just getting a Windows Smart Phone for internet and web access?

I assume that this question is for me. I need to use a VPN connection to get to a mainframe among other needs so I really need the data connection to a laptop.

Thanks for all of the info.
