Notebook newbie technical help

I have a Sony VAIO notebook that's about 7 years old (model PCG971L). I never used it much as it was intended for travel, then I ended up not traveling anymore. It's probably got less than 100 hours used on it.

As I'm cleaning out some clutter in my life, I wouldn't mind using it if it could be brought up to speed, I guess. For one thing, I was going to plug it into my Verison FIOS to see if I could log into MSN.com but it doesn't have a compatible jack. Two ISB ports and a female phone jack. I'd also like to consider wireless and an external mouse if feasible.

Can anyone give some direction or would it be best to use this as a paperweight and just upgrade the desktop system? Thanks,
