playing .avi videos with windows media player

.avi videos won't play on this computer but i can play the same vids on my parents computer(using windows media player) just fine. is there a setting or something that i can change?

are you missing a codec? divx, xvid, etc

well i start digging around and saw something in the settings and the avi files are in fact checked to play. when i click on a video link it says do i want to save or open, i always just open them. after it downloads it says that it can't find the proper whatever to use to play the media.

and i just went to altavista and did a video search with only .avi file and it played just fine for me. weird...

Yep codecs, uninstall what ya got and d/l and install k-lite mega package, play 99% of vids.
