i have retired firefox

well, it has served me well for the last 3-4 years but now it seems to crash very often on 2 different computers.

im not doing anything weird either, just surfing on dfwstangs or online stores and it will just crash. both computers are free of viruses, and dont have critical amounts of spyware. firefox is updated... i think its gone downhill recently, not to mention its using 80MB of memory just running google.com

going to test out opera but for now im going back to ie.

you shouldn't blame firefox for you computer making it crash

but in all seriousness, firefox has remained pretty much unchanged in the 3-4 years you have been using it, some minor code tweaks here and there.

3rd party Plug Ins can cause firefox to crash. You simply have no idea why the crash occurs unless you have a memory dump of the crash.

BTW, IE can use just as much memory or more. However that memory usage is spread out under other DLL files and executables. It is difficult to know how much memory is being used unless you know what you're looking for.

For example, if you check IExplore.exe in task manager, it may only show a small amount of memory usage. However IExplore.exe is just a program that reserves a memory space for Internet Explorer. The actual process is called WinInet.dll. Firefox runs everything under one process so it is easy to determine how much memory is actually being used.

BTW, one of the reasons Firefox consumes so much memory is because it caches old webpages so you can quickly go back to them in your history.

However, if I recall correctly, there is a setting to limit how much memory Firefox can use for this. You'll have to google it up. Try using the terms; firefox, memory, limit, "about:config"

Firefox is the most reliable and secure browser I've used over Windows.

It has a very aggressive page cache, which is both good and bad.

The only time I've had a problem with Firefox crashing is opening up certain macromedia flash or embedded video players if you have missing plug-in's.

I use FireFox and IE7 at work. If I didn't have to have IE for certain work sites, I would use FireFox exclusively.

I do have issues withe FireFox closing down, I usually notice it happening when visiting video websites like stage6.divx.com or youtube.com, I'm guessing that it's due to a plugin I have installed or to some crappy programming on the pages I am visiting.
