Desktop Problem

I came home today and my desktop is not working correctly. When you turn it on you can hear the rear fan come on and see the power light BUT before you'd hear it inside boot up and now you don't. I tried taking it it apart and cleaing it, but I'm not very savy when it comes to computer hardware.
I've been looking online and some people have said my harddrive may be bad but I've never had any problems with it until today.
It's an Emachines and I've had it for over 3yrs

Any help is appreciated, Thanks

Nothing at all, the monitor doesn't get a signal. The main thing is that you don't hear the cpu power up like I did before.

Even if you HDD were bad, you'd still see the power on self test (POST). You don't see anything, or hear the drives spin up. Any beeps? Fan on the power supply spinning at all?

I suspect mobo or power supply issue.

I did that. The power light comes on and my dvd-rom drive opens and closes but other than that you don't hear the computer power up inside like before.

I rear fan comes on and the power light comes on but no beeps and you don't hear it power up like before. I tried plugging it in elsewhere and still the same

its the test your motherboard does to make sure its working correctly before it completely powers itself up. your motherboard is bad, which means you might asd well build/buy a new computer. hooray for upgrades!!! your computer must be horrible out of date if its three years old.

Sad to say I've been reading about ALOT of emachines with these same issues!

New question, I don't care getting a new cpu...BUT can I still get all my existing info off my old cpu and put on my new one?

you should be able to get all the info off your drives. your motherboard on the other hand is probably fried. Not familiar with eMachines, but you might be able to get a rather cheap replacement motherboard. Usually just best to get a new one, or at least build it yourself.
