Video Cards

Thoughts about the Nvidia 8600 GTS 256mb card? I'm considering putting this into a system I'm building.

Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick up your shovel, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land." Nearly 75 years ago, Roosevelt said,"Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a camel, this is the Promised Land." Now Obama has stolen your shovel..., taxed your asses, raised the price of camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!

What's the major difference between the 8800 and 8600?

8800gt is the bang for the buck king. It runs almost as fast as the much more expensive GTX

I preordered 2 8800GT's from Outpost.com and got them a few weeks ago. Just one of them kicks some major ass.

8800GT is badass. It will run as fast as the GTX. It has faster memory and a faster clock speed. It just has less memory overall, but it is a way more efficient card.

here, I compared the best XFX geforce 8600gt (model PVT84JUSD4) cause it has a core clock rate of 680 mhz and memory clock of 1600 mhz and the zalman cooling fan price is $119 after a $20 rebate.

i used the cheapest XFX geforce 8800gt (model PVT88PYDF4) at $269. you can get an overclocked model and boost your performance if you want.

here is the comparison:

8600gt
Core Clock: 680 MHz
Shader Clock: 1155 MHz
Memory Clock: 800 MHz (1600 DDR)
Memory Bandwidth: 25.6 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 36960 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 5440 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 10880 MTexels/sec

Core Clock: 600 MHz
Shader Clock: 1500 MHz
Memory Clock: 900 MHz (1800 DDR)
Memory Bandwidth: 57.6 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 168000 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 9600 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 33600 MTexels/sec

Damn, that's quite a difference. Looks like that's what I'll be going with.

now keep in mind that makes all difference in the world when it comes to high res gaming but if you are using it for movies/home theater/watchin .264 encoding videos some say the 8600 is better.

its all about what you are wanting it for.

8600GT, 512MB card is pretty damn good in my opinion, no it's not the best, but for 100 bucks, it's by far the best bang for the buck. messed around on a few games last night, that i had previously played on my laptop using an ATI radeon xpress 200M... It's like a whole new game

its more expensive than the 8800 and gets outperformed. my roommate bought it before the 8800 got redone.

i think the gtx is marginally better but for the money its not worth it.

See I'm not wanting the best and the baddest card out there. I'm trying to build a PC that i game play some games on here and there that won't be outdated in a year or two for under $500 if possible. I don't know if it is possible but I want to try. I currently use my computer to watch DVD's and such in my room when I'm sitting in bed with my girl.

Right now anything will be better then my GeForce4 4600 TI
