Good Anti-Virus Programs

Looking for some good Anti-Virus and Anti-Spy applications (please don't like adaware and spybot). Only qualification: They must be free or very, very cheap.

Thanks,
Geof

Avast Anti-Virus is what I use, and I've had zero problems.

What do you consider cheap? If this is "cheap" it's a wonderful program.
http://us.trendmicro.com/us/products...008/index.html

I use it w/out any instace of problems and it's way more than just an AV program as well as licensed for three puters for 50 bucks a year. Great value if you ask me.

AVG is the cheapest and actually one of the best anti virus apps on the market for Windows. IMO their filter drivers are more stable than those from Symantec or McAfee.

AdAware is still the best at spyware/malware detection and removal. I don't know why you don't like it but its pretty much superior to anything out there. Spybot is very good too but it isn't updated as often.

Of course one thing you can do to reduce your chances of an infection to begin with is to use Firefox as your browser. However when surfing from Windows, I go a step further. I use a Virtual Machine running on VMware Player. I do all my browsing from the virtual machine. It is nearly impossible to get a virus, spyware, or malware infection using this method. There are even better ways of protecting yourself using a virtual machine but this one is the simplest.

My wifes work uses AVG on their machines and it is HEAVY! It is no where near as robust as what we use at home but is effective I suppose.

BTW her work puter is a Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8ghz(I don't understand the hype around them.) w/ 2gigs and XP Pro and is no where near as fast as our home machine w/ an Athlon64 X2 4200+ w/ 2gigs and XP MCE.<--- based on my experience w/ the two machines.
