Jailbreaking an Apple iPhone or iPod Touch..

For those that don't know, Jailbreaking is the hacking of an iPhone or iPod touch so you can install whatever applications you want on the device. There are already many applications and games available for both platforms.

If you have an iPhone or iPod touch and haven't done this, you can read about it here:

http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=212346

There are step by step directions for doing this. Its not that difficult either.....

So has anyone done this? I just did it on my 8GB iPod Touch. Now it is incredibly more useful

I know apple put out an update that made the unlocked iphones bricks...

Will this do the same with the Ipod touch? I *may* be getting one in a few weeks for my birthday, and didn't want to fuck anything up.

No, jailbreaking doesn't always work. However, you can ALWAYS to a force restore and return your iPod Touch to the default firmware. There has yet to be a single reported case of someone truly "bricking" (e.g., making permanently unusable - like a 'brick') their iPod Touch.

Here's a partial list of native iPhone/iPod Touch applications - I don't think anyone has an all-inclusive list - http://www.modmyiphone.com/nativeapps/

The update that did the bricking was version 1.1.1. However the procedure for unbricking it was discovered the same day. Version 1.1.2 did not brick iPods but required an additional script to be run in order to jailbreak it a 2nd time.

On all iPod Touches, you have to make sure your firmware is at version 1.1.1 before jailbreaking it. Then you can upgrade to version 1.1.2. If you are already on version 1.1.2, the link I provided gives instructions for downgrading to 1.1.1...

This will be SOOOOO much easier when Apple releases the Dev kit in February.

I know there are guides to doin this. But i wondered if anyone you guys had trouble jailbreaking your iphone with 1.1.2 OTB? I know they have guides that say how to do it and i've read like 5-6 of them and even seen the guides on youtube. The only thing i cant get passed is the 1.1.1 downgrade. I do the recovery mode thing. Hit the Shift update and click the 1.1.1 FW file. Then my phone stays in recovery mode. Then guides say to use ibrickr, idemocracy, or indepence, or the windows.bat file. When i kick it from recovery mode and itunes notices my phone its still on FW 1.1.2. Any ideas?

Sorry, my ipod touch was 1.1.2 right out of the box but I had no problem downgrading it to 1.1.1.

I recommend that you check out the ilounge.com forums. Ask the question and one of those guys will likely know the answer...

Yea i figured it out. Every guide i followed gave me the same 1.1.1 FW file so i assumed i was using the correct one. When i was using the FW for the ipod and not the iphone. When i got the correct FW it worked exactly like it was supposed to. Now i need to find some NES and GBA roms and learn how to put them on my iphone.

You might want to go back to the original software till 1.1.3 comes out for the iphone. some people i have talked to about it said if you have your 1.1.2 jailbroke and the update comes out, your phone will brick itself and no recovery. that is the only thing holding me back.

But you dont have to update it do you? I think they are optional? Unless they disable the phone so it wont work w/o the latest update. If they do that then i'll restore it.

I'm not sure what to believe either. I read that it will only Brick unlocked phones that are using other carriers. Then i read that it wont brick 1.1.2 iphones only ones with earlier versions. So not really sure. But i must say now that i've jailbroken my iphone i love the things i can do with it as far as customizing it.

Yea, but I'm going to hold off on jailbreaking mine. The Dev kit will be out next month and we will probably not have to go through all this anymore.

At least I hope so

And at the moment its suggested that only devs jailbreak it. I've read alot of apps dont work after you do it. And when the SDK comes out i think alot of things will change. And btw does anyone have any good installer sources?

Well reason why it says that on installer source is because not all apps work when u do the upgrade then jailbreak. And cuztomize and summerboard do not work when u upgrade. But dont really need summerboard anymore since the update brings them but from what i hear alot of apps aren't working anymore. Or from what i read on modmyifone.com

Yea i made the mistake of upgrading to 1.1.3. Alot of the apps still work but customize and summerboard dont.. Customize just had un upgrade but i still can get it to customize anything on my iphone. I did figure out how to SFTP my iphone to put ringtone on it. Getting even better by the moment.

I was reading up on it and from what I understand you have to have a 1.1.2 or 1.1.1 version and upgrade from there to 1.1.3. I have version 3 so in my case it would be a lot more work to jailbreak it (could mess up your phone too, don't wanna take the chance). If you have the 1 or 2 version then it should be pretty straightforward as far as jailbreaking it. Anyways you can go to modmyifone. com or IphoneAtlas.com to read up on the procedures and all kinds of other articles.

modmyifone.com has a lot of tips there. And there is an easier way to unlock/jailbreak/repair your phone with ziphone. Ton of guides there jus have to look around.

my friend messes with his a the time. Save your contacts on itunes, and whenever it messes up just clear it out and try again. He has tried to jailbreak his iPhone using the 1.1.3 whatever 3 times, and he finaly got it to work right.

Where is the cheapest pace to buy one? I am thinking about getting one for my GF. Or maybe a Apple Touch.

Exclamation

Well fuck me, I found a 1.1.4 jailbreak.

Link:

http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/...ad.php?t=43368

OK, here it is, the 1.1.4 jailbreak "soft upgrade".
What you need:
8gb, 16gb, or 32gb iPod Touch
Jailbroken in 1.1.2 ONLY (It works on 1.1.1, but there is a DRM issue)
BSD subsystem installed
Open SSH Installed
Wireless access on your iPod
Windows Computer (don't have a mac version yet)

So all you do is download This Package, Put the 1.1.4 Jailbreak folder on your desktop, and open it up. Find the file inside called jailbreak, and double click it. At this point make sure your ipod is on, fully charged, or plugged in, that it meets the requirements above, has auto lock set to never, and connected to wifi. Now follow the instructions that will be shown on screen. at the end it should restart by itself and boot into a jailbroken with the iphone applications 1.1.4. Now the whole process may take anywhere from 20-45minutes depending on your internet connection, it takes so long because it has to download the firmware from apple. Now at some points it may look like it is frozen and not doing anything, but leave it alone it is working. Now please report any bugs and/or problems in this thread so we can fix them ASAP. Thank you.
- ITM

MOBILE VERSION RELEASED:
Video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrHCOvyazU0
Please add this source to your ipod:
http://ipodtouchmaster.com/files/repo.xml

Go to Mobile Jailbreaks in categories and install the 1.1.4 soft Jailbreak+Apps, it will take between 25-45minutes. If it doesnt auto-restart, then manually restart your ipod after 45min. Also when you are in 1.1.4, please install boss tool and move fonts so you have enough room to install applications. thanks

I'm currently running 1.1.3 on the jailbreak, i've got the NES and a few GBA advanced roms on it. I tried to jailbreak 1.1.4 based on what it said and had no luck. I've read 2 different things:

1) That you have to be on 1.1.1 and upgrade to 1.1.4 to successfully jailbreak it.
2) You can jailbreak 1.1.4 as is.

Now I tried doing 1.1.4 with the updated Ziphone and the only thing that happened was it locked up. I let it go for an hour and a half just to see cause it said it might take a while. I'm still looking for a way to run 1.1.1 and upgrade to 1.1.4 without having to totally restore it.

Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick up your shovel, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land." Nearly 75 years ago, Roosevelt said,"Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a camel, this is the Promised Land." Now Obama has stolen your shovel..., taxed your asses, raised the price of camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!

Well, I restored my iPoT back to factory. None of my apps worked, summerboard didn't work, and none of my custom themes worked. I'm currently using 1.1.4 untill I get more time to go back to 1.1.1 and jailbreak it to 1.1.2, and maybe back to 1.1.4 depending on my mood. Sucks tho, I liked the 4 new apps, especially the email app. That little guy was pretty nifty.

If anything just restore it to 1.1.3 because that seems to be the best version to jailbreak, plus you have all the new apps. That's what mine currently is. If you want I'll send you the 1.1.3 restore file when I get home.

You'll also want to make sure that you install:

BDS subsystem
and openSSH

You'll also want to make sure that you install:

BDS subsystem
and openSSH
When do I need to intall these? I have all the firmware saved from 1.1.1 up to 1.1.4. I did the restore through I tunes with Shift + update, and i errored out, with my ipod in restore mode. I had to use ibrikr to bring it back.

So now I have to figure out how to go back to 1.1.1.

I'll look into it tomorrow, but will that jailbreak from 1.1.4?

I'll give the whole 1.1.4 jailbreak another go. I've been having problems with my ipod locking up on me and I'm not sure why. I do however have my 960 NES rooms on my ipod though.

And all of your applications still work in 1.1.4? That's the reason why I dumped it in the first place.
