PS3 40GB or 80GB HD?

What exactly can you do with the HD's? Rip movies, music, games onto it?

If you run another OS on it then it's just like a PC, whatever you feel like storing. It'll rip MP3s and store photos out of the box though. That and there is some pretty good downloadable content out there.

It's just a regular old laptop hard drive, you can always upgrade later or plug in an external drive. That and they will stream from any PC on your network so it doesn't really make sense to spend a whole lot more for internal capacity.

I went with the 80 gig for more space and backwards compatibility. More USB connections and chip size are also some other differences.

However I did not have to pay retail, and the price difference for me was minimal.

Any links to any of the down loadable content you can put on a PS3? Can you put ripped movies on there? That would be the big seller for wanting to get the 80GB HD.

BTW, this isn't for me. I haven't used my PS2 in a couple of years LOL!

My understanding is that you can add an external USB drive to a PS3 anyways.

Not that it matters, I've already put a media server on my Mac and can stream movies, music, and pictures to the PS3 and my big screen...

Now I just need to be able to rip BlueRay disks

What else other than the 20gb difference is yours to mines.

40g or 80g doesn't matter, since you can upgrade the drive with any standard laptop hdd at any time you want.

But, if you want to be able to play PS2 games, you'll need the 80g for the backwards compatability. They removed that for the 40g version.

I have seen 120g but I am guessing that person has already upgraded their model.

The article lies, mine won't play AVI or MPEG-4 through the media center part. Trying another piece of software now that converts to PS3 compatible files, we'll see. Takes forever though!

Why not just boot into Linux when you want to watch videos that aren't in a PS3 supported format?

That being said, I thought I'd heard the latest PS3 firmware update added divx/xvid support (edging out MS's recent update which also does this)? Is that not the case?

[edit]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3#Media_Playback_Features

Shows divx/xvid support here
