USB thumb drive problem

My brother called today and has a fairly new computer, USB 2 ports and a hub also. He has an old thumb drive (LG 1 gig) that it recognizes, as well as a printer and camera.

Now he bought a new USB 1 gig thumb drive and it does not recognize it. When you plug it in it does the weird 4 bong noise thingie, does not show up in Device Manager. He tried an old camera that has never been plugged into this computer, same thing. Seems like anything that has not ever been used on this system does not get recgonized???

The user accouint is an Admin account, rebooted, tried to reinstall drivers, no luck.

Any suggestions, other than reinstall Windows XP?

tried to reinstall the usb drivers for the mobo? or the drivers for the devices? my bet is that the motherboard usb adapter drivers are in need of replacement/repair.

Well, I think it may have been something in the registry, did a repair/reinstall and it works now. Stupid HP computers!

ugh. is it one of those HP computers that has the restore partition? if that thing gets infected BTW, you're screwed. went through something similar when my future father-in-law thought he bought my fiancee' a "good" computer.
