Question Best user friendly program for updating/maintaining website?

A friend of mine is setting up a website for me and he is pretty knowledgeable about code etc. The problem is that I want to be able to maintain/alter it myself once it is set up. What are the best user friendly programs to use for maintaining a site? By maintaining I am referring to changing pictures and text. Also adding things like forms and maybe altering a design or two every now and then. The guy helping me says that FTP is what he is going to use. The program he recommended was Contribute, but warned that it is expensive and not the most userfriendly for me. Is there something easier/better than Contribute?

It has been years since I f'ed with web sites...

1. FTP is just how he is going to put your web site filees...on a web server.

2. I'd use whatever he's using, assuming he's not hand jamming it. My experience is that if you flop between programs...one will f' up the other. That may no longer be valid....

3. You probably should post up what all is going to be on the site. If it is going to be quite complex, you maybe SOL.

Take care,
