The importance of updating drivers...?

Is it really all that beneficial to make sure that all your drivers are up to date? Will performance decrease in some way if they get to old? If so, how do you update them and be sure that they are properly installed and working correctly? Once while re-installing a printer of mine, i came upon a window that pertained to the drivers of the device. it had a lil tab that said "check for updates" or something like that. Also in the same window i saw that the drivers that it was currently using were from around Feb of 2005. so i clicked "check for updates" and apparently it went to the web (did not open web browser or anything) and downloaded and installed its new drivers because the date of the drivers then changed to be July 2007 or something like that. And when i clicked check for updates again, it said that i had the most current drivers.

Is this the easiest way to update drivers? It seems that going to the website and getting them manually is kind of a pain. You gota find them, then download, then install. I don't even know if when you install them, that its garanteed to be using the new ones. Don't you have to go in there and do some pain in the ass deleting or disabling of the old ones?

oh by the way im running Xp service pack 2, if that matters.

Generally, I avoid updating drivers if my system is working fine unless there is some kind of security issue with the old one. I've seen new drivers cause all kinds of grief, a driver is generally best left alone if it is "happy".

If it isn't broke, don't fix it, simple as that.

Windows update only shows certified windows drivers. What that means to you is nothing. Companies have to pay money to be a windows certified driver, there is no need for 90% of companies to care.

typically i'll update drivers as I find out new ones are released, but i don't constantly check. The one's included with Windows update, as God has said, are certified, and nothing more, a lot of times the manufacturer will even have newer drivers on their site than what is certified by Microsoft.

Realliy no performance issues arrise, by running older drivers, now if you start to experience problems, i'd recommend looking at the drivers you are running.

Jeebus. If your system works, DON'T FUCK WITH IT. If a new program forces you to update - usually games & video drivers, as has been mentioned - pray doing so doesn't break something.

A newer driver might yield some slight feature, but it's a lot more likely to be a gust of wind to the Windoze house of cards. Unless your system crashes / freezes frequently AND you have good reason (like a hardware mfr says so) to think a driver upgrade addresses the issue, leave it alone. You have better things to do than to worry about whether your drivers are up-to-date.

well i kinda figured as much, its just that i have heard a few people say to one person or another "do your system a favor and update your drivers." which made me wonder.
