Considering a change of ISPs

Currently have SBC(ATT) Yahoo and have been pretty happy... but yet another price increase has pissed me off.

So, I'm thinking about changing to something else... I'll have to change my e-mail address and all associated accounts and services but dammit, I'm angry.

What are y'all using and what's the monthly fee?

How about Google's G-mail service?

Anybody have any recommendations?

Given that residential ISP service is heavily dependant on your location - tell us you options or at least your location first.

If FIOS is available, there is no other option. After that, it's a price vs needs thing really.

Get webhosting and register mardyn.com or whatever you want that's available. Almost all webhosting packages I saw include email service. Then you can have [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], etc. You can make a unique email address for every message board, online store, news website, etc. Then you'll know who's selling your email address to spammers. Or you could just stick with [email protected]. Whatever ISP you use then is irrelevant.

If Fios is available, there's no question as to who to use.

No fios out here in BFE... I currently have wireless broadband through Texas Cell Net, and can have dedicated e-mail through them... but I've maintained a dial-up account with SBC/Yahoo to retain my longtime e-mail addresses as a convienence. It looks like if I change ISPs, I'll lose those addresses and have to establish new ones.

I've not used gmail much, but it works out well when I do use it. Think they just opened support for IMAP, which is good for mobile devices.

I personally hate hotmail, yahoo and the other old time email providers. SPAM city in accounts that never actually sent an email to anyone.

Renan's idea works well, I've done it and it is quite handy to have all those accounts. I think dollar for dollar, since you're already paying for another type (or otherwise have it) of Inet connection - that'll be your best bet. Buy a yearly plan or something and it'll probably boil down to paying 3-4 dollars a month for more email accounts then you'll ever use. Additionally you'll get FTP/HTTP space and probably some other goodies.

The best part is you don't really have to be concerned about their web site reliability. You just need steady email service. THEN if they ever piss you off, you just move providers and keep the same email addy.

You could also host all this yourself, but I assume that is not an option.

Take care,

My next house will have FIOS or it won't be my house...

Seriously, I told my wife that I will not consider any new house if it doesn't have FIOS availability.
