DVD rip

I want to back up a DVD collection... With storage prices so cheap, just say for argument sake that you have unlimited space. I want to have a true copy on the computer that can be played from the PC for a home theatre type setup, or to be burned on a dual layer or single layer disc if need be.

I really don't want to compress unless it won't degrade the video. I've played with some different software that allows multiple levels of compression and formats, but not really sure if a direct copy is a good idea or going with divx, xvid, mpeg(X), iso, etc etc. would be better...

Suggestions?

I'd leave it DVD format, reauthor and leave out everything except the main movie(trailers, subs etc) fit most movies on dvd-r with little or no compression. About the fastest and cheapest way to "backup."

Decrypter is ok and USED to be the best but further development has been shut down. It doesn't get by every copy restriction anymore. Last two ive done ended with an I/O error. Ended up using dvd fab platinum to rip to HD. Shrink is a great program also.

DvD Shrink is good if you can find a good DL source. OneClick is another good program.

since you say storage size is unlimited then make an image file.

it's quicker since there is no encoding that takes place.
no picture loss or compression.
it can be burned to a disc later to make an exact copy of the dvd.

Funny, I never thought about actually doing that.

Trick is he wants to play the video from a PC/Server somewhere. Yeah, there are apps that mount images - just dunno about DVD images.

Would that be an ISO extension or some other type of image?

i think it saves the image as a folder with 2 folders inside. audio folder + video folder.

the video folder usually has some .vob files and something like an image file. depending on your media player and codecs you can just open it and it will play the whole DVD.

the audio folder will have either nothing and sometimes a bunch of crap depending on if the dvd has multiple audio.

you can mount the image and it will play as a dvd. i know my modded xbox just sees them as a dvd and plays them like normal.

This is one area that I've never messed with and there are a lot of options... I was thinking that the iso would be good because I have several videos that I've downloaded as an ISO and they act just like a DVD with menu's extras and everything. I just mount them with alcohol 120% and they play in WMP like a regular DVD.

sounds like this option would be good for you then since you already know how to mount images and play them.

just make images of the discs and store the folders by movie name. you dont have to worry about the subfolders cause you will never have to go into them.

I use a cocktail of Shrink, DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD. NEVER had a problem getting through anything using at least one of these three.
