Lightbulb One plus One.....Nothing.

ok i remember asking here once if i could connect two laptops with an ethernet cable and someone said yes. well i tried doing this a few days ago but nothing happened. i tried setting up a network so i could transfer songs on my laptop to the other one to use the burner. one of my friends asked why i didnt just hook it up to the router and create a new network with the other laptop as the host. i told him that someone told me that an ethernet cable would work just as well. so how can i link them up so we can transfer stuff??

What kind of network do you have at the house? Are both th computers hooked up to the network? You can connect 2 computers using a CROSS OVER cable. This will be a different cable though then what you are using. If you need help pm me.

no, his laptop is connected via wireless and the main computer is connected through router. im trying to link up to his laptop to my laptop. i dont want to go and set up a new network because they get all bitchy thinking im giving them viruses and whatnot; theyre computer illiterate. so i just want a simple way to do this.

Frankly....nevermind.

Are the "wireless" and the "router" on the same network and/or the same device? If so, you don't need to connect them via copper since they'd be connected already...assuming they are the same network.

Past that, you'll just need to google how to make shares, map drives...etc in windows.

If I'm thinking wrong, you should probably clarify the "wireless" and the "router".

yah his laptop and the desktop are on the same network. what i want is mine connected to the wireless which im finally guessing id have to network through the router. the last thing i want to do is map out the drives because theyll get all bitchy at me for doing this. i just want a plain simple direct connect to his laptop.

Who is "they?" Your IT Department? If this is a formal organization type of thing, all bets are off IMO. It's hard to tell what you can and can't do. Now there are a million ways to do things, but if you're trying to be sneaky it is a different ball game.

If it's just people, tell them to f off and do what you want.

Take care,

As Blue5spd said, if you want to connect directly using an ethernet cable you need to get a Cross-Over cable, the one you are using most likely is just a Patch cable. Or you could also get a USB transfer cable as well, these are very simple to use and will also give you a faster transfer rate, however they do cost more $$ (3-6' Cross-Over cable = $5-10, USB transfer cable = $30)

I've never used the transfer cable, but I do hear they work well. Easy solution. Or an external drive maybe another option.

1. Go buy a crossover cable (about 5 bucks)
2. Connect the crossover cable to your computer and his.
3. Go to the network settings on your computer and set the TCPIP setting to the following:
IP Address: 10.0.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

4. Go to your friends computer and set the TCPIP settings (for the Network card using the crossover cable) to the following:
IP Address: 10.0.0.2
Subnet Mast 255.255.255.0

5. Map a drive using the IP address (google it if you don't know how)

Note: you do not need a Default Gateway or DNS address for either computer)

He said mapped drives are not an option for some odd reason.

if both computers are connected to the same network thats all you need.

just make sure both workgroups are the same and that file sharing is enabled. then you can go to my network places and navigate the other computers files.

you should just call geek squad
