Website name expiration

I've never gone after a website that has already been registered. I'd really like to scoop it up if it expires and becomes available. It looks like it's a parked website since nothing pulls up when you put in the website name. The website name is expiring Nov. 6th based off Whois.com

What does it mean on the update date? Was it updated beyond the expiration date and will reflect the new expiration date AFTER Nov 6th?

This is what whois says:

"Registrar: DOMAINDISCOVER
Whois Server: whois.domaindiscover.com
Referral URL: http://www.domaindiscover.com
Name Server: NS1.DOMAINDISCOVER.COM
Name Server: NS2.DOMAINDISCOVER.COM
Status: ok
Updated Date: 06-oct-2007
Creation Date: 06-nov-2002
Expiration Date: 06-nov-2007

>>> Last update of whois database: Tue, 23 Oct 2007 09:40:14 UTC <<<

NOTICE: The expiration date displayed in this record is the date the
registrar's sponsorship of the domain name registration in the registry is
currently set to expire. This date does not necessarily reflect the expiration
date of the domain name registrant's agreement with the sponsoring
registrar. Users may consult the sponsoring registrar's Whois database to
view the registrar's reported date of expiration for this registration."

Update means that record was last updated with the whois server you are using on that date.

Sorry for being dense here...So you're saying that the information on the owner/etc was updated on whois server only?

So if I want this website name, what is the most realistic but still economical way to get that name?? Should I just make an offer on it? Should I wait till November 6th and start waiting on the process of availablity??

I think what that means is that the website is registered with that provider and expires on Nov. 6th, the owner of the domian name could have done one of those 10 years deals on the name, then registered it with anyone he wanted too. I did that with mine.

It's like the dns entry will stop working on Nov. 6th, but the website name may NOT become available.

They've done studies you know.... 60% of the time, it works every time

there are domain squatter services, that you can pay to snag it for you as soon as it comes available.

What kind of sucess rate do they have? Do you have any recomendations?

I've seen the "back order" service that godaddy offers. Is that a better way to go? Or can I just equip myself with the "know how" and go after it alone?

If you're trying to snipe like hotmail.com or some shit, its not going to work so dont even bother thinking you're some bad ass thats going to reroute microsoft.com, most registrars give people a month leeway too, let alone if its a big website, then again, hotmail got owned a few years ago when they forgot to pay the bill.

What are you trying to get?

Nah, it's not a big website name that I'm after. It's just a web address that I'd like to have for one of my businesses.

The .net version is available. But I want to have both the .net and .com.

kinda, back in the day ( i think pre 99 ), this guy went to go check his email but hotmail couldnt authenticate with passport.com ( which is whar usernames and passwords are housed ). He renewed passport.com and he was able to get his mail. Another instance happened semi recently. well at least this decade.

That's pretty interesting. You would think big companies like hotmail and Microsoft would keep up on when their domains' registries run out.
