blocking internet access based on windows cd key?

i setup a coworkers laptop with xp pro recently and apparently TWU has blocked internet to the laptop.

she called campus tech and they said it was because she had an windows cd key that was not valid and the CISCO network that restricted access.

has anyone ever heard of this? if i change the key to a different key in the system's registry would that fix it or will windows need to be reinstalled?

That's interesting. My wife goes to TWU and she's been on one of our laptops that didn't have a valid XP key and it still worked for her. This was a few months ago, though.

i think we are safe.

i got the computer today to take a look at. right off the bat you get a windows message box.
"you may be a victim of software counterfeiting.
this copy of windows did not pass genuine windows validation"

looks like she tried to run automatic updates or something and got owned. i may have to format her computer and install home edition with her original key but i will try to uninstall the security update and change the key.

either way its gay.
