He said he want's to build a newer one, so I think it's fair to assume a NEW computer.

MK: Build a new one, if you know how to do it.

You can get a pretty modern mobo processor combo at Frys for between 100 and 150 that will run very fast. I bought my motherboard at Micro Center for 75 bucks and bought a new 3 ghz dual core Pentium D on Ebay boxed with fan for 50 bucks. Add however much memory you want for cheap and you can have a blazing fast computer for around 200 bucks or less if you re-use your drives, case, pwr supply and whatever cards you have now...you may have to get a new video card though cuz most newer boards dont have an AGP slot..seems PCI Express has taken over.

that's because it is better, and there was never any question whether PCIE was going to replace AGP, it was just a given and transition time is over

You'll need :

Case
Power Supply
Vid Card
MoBo
Processor
Heatsink + Fan (which usually come with processor)
Memory
HD
OS

Use Newegg.com , or if you can't wait go to Fry's. Don't buy the shit with the reduced price sticker. If you want to use the old case, and it's a dell, don't be surprised if the new MoBo doesn't fit. Dell sux.

It's pretty straight forward to get the hardware together. Install the OS, and use the driver disc that came with the mobo to install the MoBo drivers.

This is what I have:

Antec P-180
Asus P5K Deluxe
Intel Core2Duo E6600
BFG GF8800GTS 640MB
2GB OCZ DDR2 PC6400
Raptor 74GB HD
500 GB Seagate SATA HD
250 GB Maxtor HD
Thermaltake PS.

where's lone oak? i'll come over and help you put it all together if you want for a few beers shoot me a PM if u want

its pretty easy stuff if you have any hands on experience with electronics. as said above, just buy the package mother board and processor packages @ frys and you'll be fine. you will need new memory, when you go to fry's just tell them you need more memory for the board you are buying. 512 would be the minimum. 2 gig is ideal. you can get a new PCIE video card for about $40 at frys.

im building my new system tomarrow...

Last I checked, Dell cases suck (as in don't work) for standard mo-bos. Either way, after market cases are pretty slick compared to Dell/etc cases.

I gave up on building PCs, Dell is just too freakin cheap. http://www.dell.com/content/topics/t...952&lid=594502

You can get a 19" LCD monitor, a gig of ram, 80 gig HD, a fully licensed OS and a warranty for $349 with free shipping. It's a far stretch from being a badass system but compared to your 8 year old setup it'll be a massive upgrade.

A legit copy of XP is $199, the cheapest 19" monitor out there will be $150 or so. Just with those two pieces you are already cheaper to buy. Throw in the hard drive, ram, keyboard, mouse, case, power supply, CDRW drive and assembly and it's a no brainer.

theres a reason why its cheaper....

MoBos are an easy/cheap way to cut corners. XP is only $150 and i think they might have lowered the price to $100 and you can also install on multiple PCs as in the Dell version only to that one computer. most dell, hp, and sony (and all that other shit) are really hard if not impossible to upgrade anything at all... that alone turns me off

as long as you get good deals and dont go buy things at sticker price you can build a bad ass computer for a good price

just from the Fry's ad on black friday (most of which i bought to rebuild my comp)
-19" lcd $80
-2 Gb DDR2 Ram for $40
-300 Gb SATA hard drive $50
-256mb video card $0(free after mail in rebate)
-Intel Core Duo Quad processor and MoBo package $200 (i got the MoBo upgrade for $50 more though...)
-18x DVD writer $20
-case/PC tower- anywhere from $50 to $150
-keyboard $0 (free after mail in)
-Optical mouse $10

thats a bad ass computer for $450 and probobly about 4 hours of your time. show me a computer that can truly out perform that for anything under $800 bucks

forgot to add the OS...
-you can DL it for free
-share a copy with a friend... $25 a piece with 4 ppl

totaling $475

i had a Dell and it was easy to upgrade. it was nothing to upgrading the HD, video card, memory and hardware. now, i never messed with anything on the mobo or anything. im running a Asus Pundit-R, it is a slim line PC, but it has a 3.2ghz prcessor, 160gb hd, 1gb DDR ram and ATI Radeon 9100 IGP. it is tons faster then my last computer. i can't upgrade this one much, it only has 2 PCI slots for normal cards and thats it. i do want to upgrade to 2gb ram though

So rather than give you the monthly reduction they give you a check annually
like the IRS.

Just buy a prebuilt one, they are cheap enough now days that you're not going to save yourself a ton of money making one, unless you want a bad ass top of the line system. Anything you buy these days will make your 1994 hardware look like a joke.

Might make your head spin. I have a potential buyer for it and it should be gone tomorrow.

I'd check out the fry's board/cpu combos

My kids pc is using one I got a few years ago for under $100

My rig is an AMD X2 3600 overclocked, Gigabyte SLI board, 7900GS 256mb video, and 2gb ram.
