Best wireless router?

What would you guys recommend?

LinkSys, Belkin, netgear??????

we live next door to my girlfriend's dad. houses are next to each other. we want to put a wireless router on her computer so her dad will be able to use the internet next door.
distance is about 80 to 90 feet.

linksys WRT54G... end of story If you put it on the side of your house closest to her dad's then you should be covered in both pretty easily.

keep in mind that d-link makes most of the parts for the major manufacturers.

but brand is less important than your wireless system as a whole. best is gonna be N mimo, but you'll need an N mimo card to get the full speed and range out of it. If you're going N, get the Belkin N1 Vision. Thing is badass.

Im a linksys fan... never had a problem with one. I have setup atleast a dozen of them and its been smooth sailing. My neighbor can get signal from our b/g band linksys from a good 150-200'.

The new N band or whatever its called is supposed to have really good range...but like homeboy said above, you will need a N band wireless card to get the full benefit.

Quickest, best range. Only thing better is Optical Wireless, which I'm pretty sure is a myth.

Yea, its kinda high. But the price is in line with other routers that have gigabit ethernet ports. The main thing though is the huge feature set. The diagnostics alone make it worth it IMO.

That said, there isn't a thing wrong with a Linksys either.

I just checked that out, only made it a few pages into the manual and gotta go to work. Seems like a decent price for 180. Not for everyone, but a hell of a device for home use.

I just bought the lynksys wrt54g router, and a network capable MFL printer.

I'm uber dense when it comes to anything related to technology, but had the printer reading off the router in about 20 minutes, only clicking through the cd's they provide for install.

Wireless printing for the office ftw!

it's pretty sweet.

will measure your upload speeds and download speeds and pop it out on a digital readout ont he router, and also lets you view every computer using your network as well.

Scary but I agree. Actually, get any WRT54G v.1 through v.5 and they use broadcom. You can flash the firmware with DD-WRT which is Linux based and it makes it one badass router. I got about 1/5mi radius on mine

bringing this back up. im a wireless novice, btw.

i have a similar scenario as the op. i dont have internet at the apartment yet, and my neighbor told me i can use his high speed net if i buy a wireless router. will i need to plug anything into wall to use a router? i feel like i am ripping someone off by not having a net provider

where are these firmwares you speak of? I have a WRT54G and I am looking to upgrade to N. I want to have the new AP before I start messing with my WRT54G though. If I brick it, the gf will be pissed.

What's the difference between the WRT54G and GL? I can get a G, if I'm not mistake, for free. If It's a good one, can I use it in conjunction w/, not recplace, my Actionjunk router the Verizon gives you for the Fios service?

The older verison of the G, <5.0 are good. The newer ones suck ass. The GL is basicly 4.0 which runs linux.

"WRT54GL

Linksys released the WRT54GL in 2005 to support third-party firmware based on Linux, after the original WRT54G line was switched from Linux to VxWorks, starting with version 5. The WRT54GL is technically a reissue of the version 4 WRT54G."
