Help me with my laptop...

I have a Toshiba laptop thats about 1.5 years old. I've searched around to buy a new computer, and they are all freaking expensive!

I like the laptop I have now, but I'd like it a little faster. Right now it has a 1.60ghz processor, 504mb of ram and an 80g hard drive. I'm running programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Quickbooks, DVD burning and of course the internet

What can I do to speed things up a little? How much would one of you charge me to install some new components?

Thanks,
Nick

Because he said 'load', 'horse', and 'porn' all in the same sentence?

The shit that needs to be done to that laptop to make it better won't require rocket science. Just someone who has done it a time or two.

That person should optimize the OS using all the known BS to do so. Additionally, I'd recommend at least 1Gb or RAM - probably 2 if you can swing it. If it is a laptop with a 4200rpm drive on it, I'd throw on a 5400rpm drive.

Id go with more ram...its simple to put in Nick. There is an access panel that comes off the back of the laptop, you pull out the old ram and put in the new stick.

Streamlining the OS and RAM are the two easy ones. 9 times out of 10 standard users have way too much crap running via TSRs and services. RAM is always a winner.

Not trying to hijack the thread but I have a Toshiba laptop as well with a 1.7 ghz Celeron processor. It currently has 512 mb of ram and I want to upgrade it. Is there a certain kind I need for it? I know I need laptop memory, but I have seen pc2700 and pc5400... do i need one over the other?

Thanks.

BTW nick, Fry's runs specials on their one gig stuff for like $25

make sure its laptop ram and not regular pc ram. Check toshibas website for your computer specs. they have detailed specs sheets and will say what speed ram you have. Open up your computer and see if you have 1 stick or 2 to make up the 512mb or ram. The link I posted above shows how to replace your ram.

I can handle the replacement of it. There is one stick of it now. I was going to replace the one 512 mb stick with two 1 gb sticks. I didn't know if it would be okay to through pc5400 in there. Fry's has 2 1gb pc5400 Notebook Memory sticks for $65. Would that be okay to put in there?

You need to know what the capacity is ram wise as well as what speed it can use not just what's in it. Sometimes they can take a higher speed than what is currently in it.

Go here and it will tell you what you can use speed and capacity wise.
