I hate ISP tech supports

I'm having major latency issues with my home internet connection so I call my ISP.

First level tech instantly sends me to the next level after I explain that i am having a huge latency issue. The second tech asks me the same exact questions the first one did and followed up with the same resetting of the fucking modem, then transfers me to the 3rd level support. At this point I still get little help as he tells me i should have all solid lights. I'm like well the link lights blinking. He instantly says oh then its the modem. I about lol'd, and reply'd, you do know its blinking because i'm sending traffic out the connection, I just stopped my ping and its a solid light.

Now he's sending a tech out here to look at the send/recieve signal ( which they did when they installed the service and i'm not getting any packet loss of substantialness ).

My problem is 250 - 700ms ping times which is just retardedly high. Even browsing websites is a fucking chore, let alone any video games.

I really hate technical support. My ISP is Time Warner.

Yeah, I basically come to tears when I have to call an ISP's tech support.
Yes, it's plugged in....yes...dhcp...yes...got ip...blah blah...

I wish you could take an ISP user test to bypass the people who know crap.

TWC was really bad for me. Luckily I had another ISP choice that is a ton better. The suck part is they still walk you through the same shit you've already checked so you did not have to call....

...I usually act like I'm doing it while smoking a cig outside or something.

Take care,

I had an issue once that the tech morons wouldn't/couldn't fix. After a week of non-fixes, I looked up @Home's CEO, CIO, CFO, etc. Got their names and randomly addressed emails to them ([email protected], [email protected], etc, using common corporate email standards) with a form letter of complaint.

I'll be damned if one of the emails must've got to someone, 'cause the next day I had THE manager of all of Fort Worth give me a call about my problem. I was soon fixed up after that.

I've done that sort of thing before for other things as well. The key is to be professional and mature about it when mass emailing higher level people in a company. If you're not, they just ignore ya.

It works though. Helped me out on more then one occassion...hard to be mature though when it something that really hits your wallet.

Take care,

Do you have ANY other ISP options? Considered moving?

Even the MIN is bad - depending on what you're trying to ping. Do traceroutes confirm it is in their little area of the Internet?

I wake up this morning and the stats are back down to normal levels if what they should be ( 29ms average ).

I would move ISP's, but I actually like time warner for the most part, I've had them for almost 5 years now, and i've had only a handful of total outages. Other than this reoccurring latency issue, the service is fine. I pay like $99 for cable internet, TV, and telephone, changing providers wouldn't be fun.

I take it you are tracing to your box at home from work? What the hell kind of path is that taking, through asiapac and back 3 times?!

show me the full trace, also i didn't read close but did what did the tech find out about your signal at your prem (this happen yet)? I wouldn't rule anything out, I had weird Vid on demand issues (which is a digi stream) w/ verizon fios; only fault, singnal was great at my prem we swapped router, things been perfect since. its fast as hell too i love fios.

me to san jose..

When you call Verizon, after you enter your phone number, just say "agent" and youll save yourself 30-45 min of bullshit automated troubleshooting

This shit is not even high speed anymore. They have sent out 3 different techs now, and its still not fixed. Hell, the connection to the first hop is erratic. The tech that came out today told me "Well its not our stuff causing your latency", I'm running a fucking Linux box, I know EXACTLY what is going in and out of my connection, I don't have spyware on my network or anything else that would be causing my grief of an internet connection. I spent 3 years at my last place with 0 problems in connection let alone a fucking latency issue. I'm truly pissed off now, anyone know of any other providers out there? I've been a loyal customer for the last 5 years and have recommended them so much at my current job ( which is nothing but a bunch of IT nerds ), and now i feel like i shot myself in the foot.

Browsing the web is shit right now, let alone trying to play any sort of online game.

Here is about 2 minutes of idle time from my connection, as you can tell, there isnt any bullshit going out of my connection that would be slowing me down.

Also, here is my idle speeds, eth0 is my external connection.

eth0 0.527 0.000 0.527
