can i uninstall internet explorer.. and still have firefox work?

IE hogs up to much damn ram all the time. and there is no way to make it stop without manually going in there and stopping the process. im tired of doing that. so i want to ditch IE, but im not sure if i can do that and still be able to use the web like normal. i use firefox anyway cause its way better imo. anyone know the ansewer?

You cannot uninstall IE.

Iexplore.exe is the app for launching Internet Explorer. However the actual application is called WININET.DLL Iexplore.exe simply reserves the memory space that WinInet.dll is going to make use of.

So now you're asking, why can't I just uninstall WinInet.dll? Well, the problem is that your computers desktop and file management are all down through Explorer.EXE. Explorer.exe serves the exact same purpose as IExplore.exe. It just reserves the memory space for WinInet.dll. WinInet.DLL IS your desktop and file browser. If you open up Windows Explorer and put website address into the address bar, you will get that website.

So, you can't uninstall Internet Explorer. You can only HIDE it using the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel.

Sure you can, just format the drive and install an alternative OS.

Ok, you've got me there.

I might recommend Ubuntu.

My top recommendation, of course, is OSX, but then you need a new system.

ok let merephrase the question. i want ieplore.exe to quit showing up as a pracess and quit hogging ram. if i use the add/remove programs to "hide" IE, will iexxplore.exe quit showing up in my processes, and can i still use firefox to browse the web at that point?

You probably have Active Desktop turned on...

Read here for enabling/disabling Active Desktop.
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000593.htm

If it is already disabled, try enabling, reboot, and disabling. If iExplore.exe is still launching when you first logon then check the MSCONFIG startup tab to see if it is listed there. If it is, remove the check mark and reboot...
