Hard drive transplan.. what a pain in my A$$..

I am trying to transplant the hard drive of one computer to another. the old one was damaged beyond repair, but the rest of the computer is still good. i do not have a windows xp boot CD. (this my be my main problem but i think that it may not even be needed.) i dont need to repair windows or anything the as new HD works just fine.(in the computer that it came in) i just need it to boot windows, but all it wants to do (once i put it in to the compter that it's going in) is give me options of which mode i want to start in. then it fails to load windows and just restarts the whole process. i know im missing a big step here.
but i thought i would just try it anyway. anyone know what i am supposed to do next if i am to complete this pain in the ass task?

(trying to do it for family that does not have to much money. thats why i dont have a boot disc.)

You need to reinstall windows so all the drivers for the motherboard/cpu/everything else will be for what you have and not the old system

You can do that by running sysprep. I transfer drives from one machine to another all the time. Just sysprep it before you remove it from the old machine.

im not really sure what sysprep is, or where to buy it.. can you be a lil more specific on how to start the process?

re-edit. i dont think i downloaded the right thing. is the sysprep tool you are talking about standard on a windows xp home version? also i was reading google and they say that in the process you still need the boot CD. or at least thats what i get from it.
as i mentioned before.. im not going to be able to use a boot CD for this one.just gota be a straight swap somehow. can you tell me how or maybe refer me to a site that gives step by step in non comp geek terms? i know this aint hard if you just know the process.
