PCMCIA to Desktop suggestions

I had my home connection through Time Warner Cable. The cheaper AT&T DSL is not in my neighborhood.

I currently have a PCMCIA air card for unlimted wireless broadband through Sprint that I use while on the go. On top of that, I'm paying for two cellphones for unlimted access into the internet.

So $65 for Comcast, $60 for Sprint, and $40 for AT&T Wireless. At this point I'm saying FUCK $165 a month just for internet access!!

I don't download videos or watch alot of streaming vids. My air card covers just about all of my needs in a home/mobile setting. So I've disconnected Time Warner.

I plan on getting an adapter for my Sprint air card to connect to my desktop when I'm at home. I've found some PCI card adapters like this.

Before I head out, does anyone have any words of experience or suggestions on any of these? I would honestly prefer an adapter that connects via USB to make it easy to reach. My desktop sits down and away. I can't seem to find any of the USB style adapters online for the local stores.

Thanks for any input!

I would suggest getting a WRT54G3G.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Linksys-Wireless...QQcmdZViewItem

Its a router that you plug the card into, you got wireless arouind the house plus you can plug in other computers if needed. Plus if you travel alot, you can have it around your hotel.

edit.

if your not a baller, ignore my choice.

go with the pci adapter.

That's actually exactly what I was looking for!

My next noob question was going to be: "Once I've gotten the desktop online, how do I route the connection to other comps"

Looks like this should be something in store for pick up today too.

Thanks for the heads up. I was hoping for a quality reply like this. I appreciate the input man!

Either install a wireless PCI card or run a Cat5 cable to it. cat5 will be 10x cheaper if its like a 20ft run. wireless pci cards are like 20$ if that these days.

Actually, that question that I had was about getting other computers online if I used a PCI card adapter to get one desktop online via the air card.

But since you suggested that wireless router for my air card, that solves the problem with the other computers.

Since I've already got a wireless router now. Is there just a PCMCIA router that would be cheaper then getting the WRT543G-ST?

You can install another network card and share the internet connect into a switch to the other pcs.

Wouldn't that be a cheaper way to do it versus that WRT54G3G? Or does the added work to network it that way make the WRT54G3G the best option?

Thanks for the input, I really do appreciate the networking lesson.

ya, network card is like 10 bucks and switch is like 30. that would be cheaper, but that compmiuter has to be on for the internet to work for the others.

Well it looks like the only place right now that carries the Linksys router is Compusa. Both Frisco and Plano are out of stock. None of the other tech-based stores carry that specific Linksys router.

I ended up buying this D-Link router that is worthless. The firmware needs to be updated for it to work with my PX-500 air card. The fucking thing will NOT update and stays stuck on the 1.01 version!

Unless I can find somewhere locally, I'm going to have to order this online and wait for it. It's hard for me to fathom that there isn't any place locally from Dallas to Fort Worth that has this router in stock!! Anyone have suggestions on where else besides the bigger stores to look? Mom and pop computer stores somewhere have got to have it!

<-- impatient and doesn't like waiting on online orders.

I guess, I'll just order from Compusa and return in the store if it sucks. It looks like they have it in stock in Austin! I'm almost tempted to take a drive down there and get it! haha
