Transerring across the network

when you transfer files from across the network, can the person you are transferring from tell that you are copying their files?

They can see their lights blinking on the network card when they are doing anything.
They can see their network status with outbound packets going nuts when they aren't doing anything.

Before I keep going, give me more information. Are you worried someone is downloading your files?

not really worried but I hook my computer up to lots of different networks for work. I know that only shared files can be shared but if someone is snooping around Id like to know. I doubt they are but just like to know whats going on

In windows, there are two ways (maybe more) to know if your shared files are being accessed. One is the NetSession command which shows if other computers are connected to your PC. However if you right click on My Computer and select Manage, you can go to the Sessions icon and see exactly who is connected to a share. In Computer Management, expand, System Tools > Shared Folders > Sessions...
