Hooking up old hard drive from dead computer

I got a new computer since my old one died. I pulled out the old hard drive and got one of those IDE to USB cables. I plugged in the old hard drive to my new computer but it doesnt show up. I thought it would just show up as a drive on the new computer and i could access all my old files. Anybody know how to do this?

What OS is your current computer? If it is XP try plugging in the USB cable while the current computer is running and after the old hard drive is powered up.

ya, turn it on, then plug the usb cable while the computer is on.

if that doesn't work, then the drive letter might be something it used.

If it was used as a primary in the old system you need to set the jumpers to slave before you plug it in.. There should be a diagram on it to tell which is which.

usually this means the drive is dead, dead, not just corrupt

Im thinkin it still set to master, even if it is ide to usb its not picking up because of the jumper setting.. but it might not matter i dont know... something to check out though since its not working for him with it hooked up that way

He's forgetting to squeeze the mouse and stare at it way too long after it should've worked. Then hit something in the room, reboot and it should be good to go.

I'd personally go with making it a slave off an ide controller. Better to eliminate the USB whatever as a possible failure point as well. Just go a little old school.

I'm running Vista on the new computer. I've tied pluggin it in to the USB while the computer is on and the old hard drive is powered up and still nothing. I was wondering about the slave/master setting because it was talking about that with the cable instructions. But i dont really know what/where the jumpers are on the drive or look like. I didnt see anything that looked like i could switch a setting on the hard drive. But i'll look at it when i get home from work and see if i can figure it out.

it's a small set of pins, like 6 or 10 on the back of the drive. The junper is just a little peice of plastic with metal in it that connects 2 of the pins together. The HD sticker should have the configuraion for certain drive settings printed on it.

Its on the back where you plugged the ide and power up to. It looks like a bunch of little prongs and a little square piece that goes over 2 of them.. the diagram for the harddrive should be on top of it as to where the sqaure piece (jumper) needs to go for slave.

Type the model harddrive in google and you can pull up the manual on the drive to set the pins.

At a minimum, it repulses drives of the opposite gender.

I haven't read all of this, but I'm in the same situation. Is there any way to connect my old hard drive to my new laptop, so I can get all my old music/pics, etc?

Awesome, thanks guys. That did it, i just pulled the jumper off and i now have access to all my old files.

However, i do have a new problem. A lot of stuff i try to access, it says i do not have permission to access those files and then i have to go to security properties and make it accessible by my new computer. Is there any way to make everything on the old hard drive accessible without going thru the security thing for each folder/file?
