Picked up an Atari 7800

Went to Movie Trading Company last night to buy a copy of 300, and my gf insisted we look at CDs while we were there. On my way to the CDs, I glanced down at the cabinet where they keep used game systems, and there it was. The Atari 7800 Pro System. I'll never forget getting that console as my big Christmas gift back in 1986. I loved the crap out of that console back then, but grew bored with it when my buddy down the street got a NES. I ended up selling the console and about 30-40 games to the neighbor kid for like $10 when we had a garage sale a couple of years later. I have kicked myself for years over that. This one isn't in mint condition, but it's not too terribly beat up for being over 20 years old. It came with everything to make it work and two joysticks. I snagged it for $60. They also had a big bin full of 2600 and 7800 games. I laid them out to separate the duplicates, and then I bought every single one they had. Most of them were 99 cents, but a few were $1.99. I haven't actually counted them, but I think I bought somewhere between 120 and 150 games. I had to carry them out of there in several sacks. I have 30 days to bring any of them back that don't work. Looks like I'll be busy testing all of these games. I was LMAO at myself the whole way home. I know it's a dumb purchase, but who cares? I'm going to have a blast playing all these old school games, and should get a kick out of the 8-bit graphics. Once I get bored with it all over again, I'll stash it in a box somewhere and drag it out on occasion just to get a good laugh.

My favorite game was California Games. They didn't have it there last night. I found one bnib on Ebay for $21, but I may do some more searching.

How's it look in high definition? Have you updated the firmware yet? Get the wireless setup and what's your atari online gamertag?

You could have downloaded an emulator and all the games for free, Jluv.

but i'm sure you look at this as some sort of investment.

Emulator? What is that? If you are talking about playing games on the PC, I don't do that. Yuck. That's like me telling you that you can go to Gameworks and ride the lifesize motorcycles. Not the same thing by a longshot. It's not just about "playing" the games.

I grew up playing games with joysticks and cartridges. Not disks and controllers, or worse - keyboards and mouses. I've tried it and it just isn't any fun for me.

If that's not what you are talking about, then enlighten me. Bu t I don't think what you have in mind will be like holding a 7800 joystick and playing the game the way it was meant to be played in 1986.

It's not an investment in the sense that I would tryn to flip it for profit. It's a nostalgia thing. A vintage thing. A real deal, authentic, just like when I was a kid thing. Something tells me there are guys here around 30 (or older) that would understand what I'm getting at. Then again, it wouldn't surprise me if I am the only one around anymore that doesn't play PC games. I just don't find that entertaining.

LOL. Some people just can't get away from their computer. And YES, putting the cartridge in the console and grabbing the 7800 joystick (couldn't find a USB one on a quick google search) is (at least) half of the fun.

I could watch porn on my computer, too, even have "cyber sex", but I would much rather just bone my gf.

Anyway, I'm pumped about getting this thing hooked up tonight and trying out some old favorites.

You're talking to someone from the Atari days here as well. NES...etc. I'm not trying to argue the point, just making a point that you can play games on the PC with an old school joystick.

There is an adapter.

That one is for the 2600. Are you sure it would work for the 7800? I think the plug may be different.

Anyway, I'm taking this thing back. Remember how sometimes you have to push the game in just right and keep hitting the power button to get it to work? Well, with this one, I have to jack with it for 10 minues for every game, and some of them still don't work, or they show up in black and white. I guess that is to be expected, but it's not worth the money I spent if it's going to be that bad. I did play a few games, and got a kick out of the simplicity and square graphics. It really looks awful on a big screen, lol!

Oh well. I may still keep my eyes open for a mint condition one. I have seen some games available brand new never opened. That would be kind of nice if I found a console in great shape and just collected the games I wanted with the boxes and all.

some people are like slinkies; they're completely useless, but still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

I may check that out.

I think Pitfall is one of the most common and easy to find games. MTC had several copies. I grabbed one, and also Super Pitfall, Pitfall II, Son of Pitfall, Pitfall's Revenge, Ms. Pitfall, Pitfall Goes to Camp, Pitfall Does Dallas, American Pitfall in London, and Die Hard with a Pitfall. It's crazy.

Is it hard to find a NES these days? I think I have a couple of them. I have maybe 15 games. Are they hard to find, too? Check Movie Trading Company. They have all kinds of old stuff (used).
