Plugging external monitor into laptop?

I bought a dell flat screen monitor for a few reasons, and I'd like to know how to use it for a few functions...

My laptop is Compaq presario C300, and while it was new as of Christmas, I know it's a relatively base model.

I have an external monitor plug on the right side of it, but when I plug the flat screen in, I can't get anything to show up on the 2nd screen. I would like to either duplicate the screen on my laptop, so that my clients sitting on the other side of the desk can see what I see, or have an additional screen to display items on, if that makes sense.

Should there be something in the control panel that I can change the settings for to allow the use of a second screen? Is this something that a video card regulates? How do I know if I have a video card installed?

TIA.

( I know the flat panel works, it works just fine on the tower/desktop)

there should be something to the effect of an Fn key and on F5 or so, that will switch it. Next to the FKey number, there should be a little picture of two squares divided by a / Something like this []/[]

I see it on the F4 key. I'll try it out tomorrow when I'm back at the office.

Thanks for the replies on a Saturday night!
