Exclamation Microsoft facing $1bn Xbox bill

Microsoft facing $1bn Xbox bill

Some Xbox Live gamers have complained about fraud

Microsoft has said that it is facing a bill of more than $1bn to cover the cost of offering extended warranties, after failings with its Xbox 360.
The company admitted it had been forced to make "an unacceptable number of repairs" to the consoles after key hardware failed.

Customers who suffer the problems will now be given a free three-year warranty, the company said.

The failures are indicated by three red flashing lights on the console.

Microsoft, has not revealed how many of its machines have suffered the problem, but said the number was "bigger than we are comfortable with."

It added that the move - which will also see some people reimbursed for postage and repairs on consoles which were out of warranty - was aimed at keeping the loyalty of its customers.

"The majority of Xbox 360 owners are having a great experience with their console and have from day one," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Division.

"But this problem has caused frustration for some of our customers and for that, we sincerely apologise."

It added its Xbox division was still expected to make a profit during the financial year beginning 1 July 2007.

Separately the company has announced an October launch of its advanced version of the Xbox - the Xbox 360 Elite - in Japan, where it lags behind Nintendo and Sony in the console market.

And the company has also unveiled plans to open a software development centre in Canada which it said was a way of hiring talented people from abroad who would struggle to obtain a US working visa.

The Vancouver location would "allow the company to continue to recruit and retain highly skilled people affected by the immigration issues in the US", Microsoft said.

WTF do the "Immigration issues" have to do with a shoddy product? I guess they are trying to indicate "immigration issues" are the reason why there is a problem with the 360?

How long has the XBOX 360 been out? "was aimed at keeping the loyalty of its customers.
" I'm of the opinion they would've made this move awhile ago if that was the only reason.

Take care

That confused me as well. Sounds like an attempt to make a political statement. Bastards. Can't build a good product so they blame it on the enforcement of existing laws.

At least they are taking care of their customers. My Xbox has had to go back twice in 6 months and the last time they sent me a completely different console (I checked the build date and serial number). It sucks I have to send it back but at least they are backing their product and honoring requests like the one I made when I asked for a different console last time around.

Yeah, overall a smart move... It seems they are going above and beyond their own warranty for their customers. A billion really isnt that big of a deal, they're just adjusting their warranty estimate.

The immigration thing is a separate issue all together, you have a foreign programmer that can't get a visa... send them to Canada

My brother has gone through two premiums, and just traded it in and paid extra for a new elite. One completely fucked up one of his games. The laser burnt a circle in his madden game.

the elite wont make a difference on the disk getting scratch. The problem is when you stand it up and the disk is spinning and your cause a vibration it sends the disk into the laser and leaves a scratch. I fixed that problem by laying it on its side.

Dunno man, thats what the chick at Xbox support told me so thats why I laid mine down. All is well but I never had issues with scratched disks, just overheating.

My 360 took about 2-3 weeks from the day I sent it off to the day I got it back. When you call you have to wait on them to send you a box and packing slip to ship it all in and then send it out.

Exactly a week from when it left to when I got one back. You have to call and prepay for the repairs and they send you a box to put it in with prepaid freight. They send you a refurb unit instead of actually fixing yours.

I think that the story writer just threw that in there since it is a current microsoft news item.

immigration issues = we can't find US programmers willing to work for the substandard wages we want to pay, and the US government has capped the H1B visas that allow us to import cheaper labor As if microsoft cannot afford to pay good US wages but I guess that greed is good.

I told them NO refurb- I want a new one, repair it, or send me a check! They said okay! We'll see though.
