Windows XP vs Vista

I'm looking to buy a new laptop.

How many of you guys are using Vista? Is it worth getting over XP? Having any software compatibility issues with stuff designed to run on XP?

I have a couple of external WD Passport USB hard drives I use back and forth between home and work, and I know there was a problem running those with Vista, but I think that's been fixed.

Can a Vista machine be networked with XP machines?

Thanks

LOL...nah, that POS crapped out on me 3 years ago. I've got an XP machine now that's getting close to 3 years old (about the time most of my machines take a dump on me). I want to get a laptop this time, but noticed all the laptops I looked at in the stores had Vista on them.

Looks like I'll order online and get XP

I've been running Vista on my home machine and on my main laptop. Although there are some things to really get used to. If you turn off the access control security, and tweak a few other things, it's awesome.

I've had ZERO problems with vista on my laptop, because everything was completely compatible with it. Now on my desktop I've got a few minor issues with Windows Media Player and the onboard sound card, but that's basically because there is no Vista driver for it. I've got a Sound Blaster I found laying around that is Vista compatible so I'll slap that puppy in there and see how it goes. Oh, but I have not had one blue screen, lockup, etc. In fact I don't think I've rebooted the desktop in months.

Although there are still some apps that don't run so well on vista, everyone really is coming around, and working out the bugs on them, and I believe Vista with Office 2007 is one of the best packages Microsoft has released to date.

Vote for XP here. Only bc ive heard some horror stories about compatiblity issues. Alot of games and programs are not compatible or doggy as of yet. Surely the bugs will be worked out.

for now I also still vote for XP. I ran Vista briefly but got tired of the video/sound drivers issues and went back to XP.

You can easily network Vista with XP. If I were spending the money on a new laptop I'd go with the most recent OS available. Since it's built with it there are no compatibility issues and as for USB drives I've never had a problem.

There are millions of people that swear by Windows 2000 and 98 because XP is crap. Every new OS has people that hate it for several years, it's just a learning curve. You might as well learn the latest technology there is.

Bingo.

You buy a laptop with Vista, all the hardware is compatible with Vista.

I've got Vista on this laptop and it runs perfectly fine. I didn't turn the security tracker app off, because once you've done an administrative task once, you don't get asked again. I haven't been prompted in weeks but it sure was a pain in the ass in the beginning. I'm really happy with it. Plus, I'm pretty sure that XP is available FOR ADDITIONAL COST from most manufacturers, take a look. It wasn't worth another $200 (Dell) to get an OLD operating system to me. But then again I'm not a gamer with a ton of wacky hardware and shit on my PC.
