Need HELP from the resident LINUX guru.

I am trying to setup postfix on Fedora Core 5. When I try to run the "make" command I am getting the following error. I have been on Google for hours and still can not figure out how to get past this. Please excuse my ignorance as I am a newb in Linux.

[[email protected] postfix-2.4.3]# make
make -f Makefile.in MAKELEVEL= Makefiles
(echo "# Do not edit -- this file documents how Postfix was built for your machine."; /bin/sh makedefs) >makedefs.tmp
No include file found.
Install the appropriate db*-devel package first.
See the RELEASE_NOTES file for more information.
make: *** [Makefiles] Error 1
make: *** [Makefiles] Error 2

try 'whichmake' to make sure that you have 'make' installed. that should give you the path of where 'make' is. (should be in the user/bin)

Thank you for your quick response. Here is the command

[[email protected] postfix-2.4.3]# whichmake
bash: whichmake: command not found

It appears that the "make" command is not installed. How do I go about installing it?

<-- NEWB!

Try to start postfix and then check is /var/log/messages and see if it took a shit somewhere or you could do strace /etc/rc3.d/postfix (or w.e postfix is called)

Dont EVER trust service to be honest with you..... service is just a handy way to start shit....but I have had to blatantly lie to me 100's of time

also do and give us the output.

ps aux | grep -i postfix

OKay so post fix is not running at all.....

try running service postfix start ; ps aux | grep -i postfix

and see if you see postfix running if not....then you could try to run a strace on the postfix command by doing

whereis postfix (find its absolute path)

then so

strace

and then find where it dies.

I was about to say that. Thanks for doing it before me. I hate trouble shooting Linux.

Tell you what. Get some MMA gloves, and a helmet. We'll spar 3 5 minutes rounds. We'll see if your thoery about the paper bags holds true. After I'm done with you, I'll choke cameron. ( I won't use the training helmet.)
