winlogon.exe, services.exe, lsass.exe

all corrupt, giving me a "BAD IMAGE" error when i boot to windows, followed by an error that mentions SHLWAPI.DLL. I managed to boot to knoppix and replace the shlwapi file, but to no avail. chkdsk does nothing. I've run the rescue console, but that doesn't seem to be much help either.

I'm really trying to save this machine without having to format it, the user has LOTS of database and VMware/db2/etc code and product on there and really can't stand to lose much of it.

Mucho thanks ya'll.

how long has the system been doing this? XP? Have you tried a system restore through the OS?

With the windows disc in, did you select Repair? I'm sure you did.

Sounds like you've got a toughie.

Yeah, i've been through the repair console to no avail. I was thinking about tossing a non-destructive copy of the image on there, but i'm not sure what 'non destructive' actually entails, if it's just a replacement of the filesystem and core files, or if it's going to wipe the drive.

Have you tried a re-install as per http://www.informationweek.com/windo...leID=189400897

(skip the intro). Did this recently with a customer's workstation. It worked, computer was able to boot. Neither he nor we trusted the drive at that point so we xfr'd his data files to a new computer via external drive, reinstalled /reconfigured apps. PIA, but he is up & working.

You might also throw the drive into another computer as a non-boot HDD. Sounds like Windoze has done the typical crap-it's-pants routine, but data is likely still intact. You might have to copy the crucial data files to the primary drive, reformat (or replace the drive), reinstall the OS & programs - but the user's data should be intact.

If all these tricks don't work just boot your hdd up as a slave drive on another pc and grab your data off. You probably already knew that but I'm just sayin.

Hey asshole, I didn't toast the board. It commited suicide. I just pulled a Dr. Kevorkian on it when I pulled the CMOS battery. Even Cameron admitted the board owned itself. I upgraded nicely.

USB harddrive enclosure - FTW!

remove drive, put in hard drive enclosure. Install new hard drive, Re-image.

Copy data back from USB hard drive.

You're welcome Kyle
