I have a virus

My computer at home has a Virus. I know there are some web sites that I can download a free virus scan to clear my computer. I thought there could be something like that to try before I spend money taking it to someone to get it fixed. Can anyone help with this issue? It's running so slow. What do you suggest?

TIA,
Lindsay

I don't down load things on my computer for that reason. I had Norton on it, but that shit didn't do anything.

You should be able to visit a site without getting a Virus. I think it's from Myspace.

Also make sure active x scripts ask for your permission before running. Tons of spyware/viruses are available on myspace.

AVG doesn't do a firewall. I'd really recommend having someone that kind of knows what they are doing setup a hardware one through a router as well as using the one built into XP/Vista.

You'd also probably be way ahead by pulling your hard drive out and having someone scan it with a clean machine. I can't count how many machines I've had to eradicate viruses from this way. It gets annoying waiting 30-40 minutes for an antivirus program to install and having to run it for 4-5 hours on an infected machine.

My Dad had a virus on his PC and it took him around 6 hours for everything to run. So that was my only down fall on doing it myself.

Would it be very expensive to take it to someone like you siggested? I would rather it get done right since I don't know much about a virus or how to get rid of it?

Also, if I was to take it somewhere to have it worked on, where do you recommend? Should I take it back to where I bought it? I bought it at Comp USA

lindsay,
you may want to try to restart in safemode and uninstall everything you didnt install as well as uninstalling norton. then you should be able to restart in normal mode and install AVG although it sounds more like you have spyware.

not sure what a good spyware removing program is. hijack this? adaware?
ive used firefox and never had that problem.

For spyware removal use at least two different ones. I use AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy.

http://www.trendmicro.com follow the links to the free online services and run the free housecall online scan. This is an excellent, free online security scan.

http://security.symantec.com is another good, free online scan.

Neither of these provides full time protection.

I should warn you
(her) that although the Zone Alarm firewall is great it will be annoying for the first few days to a couple of weeks depending on use of your pc. It has to learn how you use it and various programs that need internet access.

Microsuck tried to mimmick(sp) this w/ Vista but apparently is lacking.
