Loadin XP on a ThinkPad T30, help plz

I place the CD in the drive. It boot says, "Press any key to boot CD" I do. Then it flashes, some thing about inspecting hardware. Nothing else appears to happen.

XP CD will boot fine on my desk computer. Knoppix live CD boots fine on laptop.

I figured it out. XP was hanging while inspecting the HD. I had Red Hat Fadora Core installed. XP probably couldn't figure out what it was.

From a terminal of the Knoppix Live CD, I did the following:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1

It blew away the MBR. XP was able to do the install. Stupid XP.

If you need anything for that machine, LMK. I've got a bunch of t30's we dont use at my work (upgraded to 4x series, now t60p's). Power cords, docking stations, and all the software/hardware you could imagine.

Holy crap, you should get an award. No seriously, someone actually figured out their problem and gave a good explaination of how they did it. That's does not happen too much around here.

Good find though, I probably would not of figured it out.

Ok, next problem.

I am using an XP retail version CD. Loading on the HD is ok. I used the XP key on the sticker attached to the laptop. XP says that it isn't valid.

I can't tell if the key number on the sticker is an OEM or retail number. Does it matter?

Listen to my buddy, Jeff Bolton, from 6-9 AM Mon-Fri.

Think you need to format/reinstall your OS(XP), read this first.

You could try to download an OEM cd from bit torrent then use your OEM key.
