Just bought a GForce 7600GT Graphics Card

Ok, so I have been a console gammer since the nintendo era, never really played computer games do to the fact I hated to spend money on a game and it ran slow or didn't work cause I didn't have the right amount of memory or whatever...I just wanted to pop in a game and play.

Well I have decided to try computer gaming for bit and went ahead and bought a 7600GT graphics card with a 500w power supply. I want to buy the 20" HP monitor later but for now is there anything else I need to buy to play games on max setting or will this card due for now? Mainly FarCry and Fear

I have a 2 year old HP Pavilion a300y with Pentium 4, eveything is stock and I don't know the rest of the specs on this computer, I don't know jack about computers in general and I don't want to spend a lot to play video games

So if anybody could give me the specs on my computer and whatelse I might need I will be a happy man

Red and White 98R1...Look now cause in a second I'm gonna pass you

You can pass me now, sold the bike =(

umm if you plan to play games on max settings. you bought the wrong card.. my 7800 GTOC was barely able to keep up on max settings for some games.

I moved to a 8800GTX super clocked and it seems to cope fine now, but your 7600 should be okay for most modern games and mid level at best, unless you play low res mid/high quality.

Well I only paided $88 for this card so it was alot better deal for my budget than an 8800 card...and I just want something to play games on until I get a PS3. Is the 8800 card the newest one out or is there going to be a better card out soon?

the 8800 series is the top end i think right now. they come in 8800 GTS, GTX, GTX super clock, GTX (some other slightly higher clocked) and GTX ultra.. although the ultra is like $800 and doesnt seem to out perform the normal GTX. i bought the GTX super clocked as it was faster then the normal GTX but only 30-40 more.

What is overclocking and how does that effect computer gaming?

overclocking means you basically force the device you are overclocking to operate at a higher clock rate. In my case the default CPU clock is 575 mhz and 1800 for the ram. My card is factory OCed to 620/2000 so it runs faster then a normal one.

You are increasing the processor speeds or memory speeds of your computer, be it the actual CPU, RAM, or the gpu/ram on your videocard. Normally, it increases gaming performance. But there is so such thing as overclocking too far which can cause excess heat, video artifacts, component damage, and other anomalies.

So with this overclocking and new graphics cards and whatnot is there that much difference than say an xbox360/PS3 connected to a HDTV?

You talking about the R600? you got a link for those tests?
Most test i've seen are extremely far fetched.

I'll give it that, in "synthetic benches" (which everyone plays) its scores are more than impressive. But from what I can see its performance in "real" games is mediocre at best and its a let down since this card has been MIA for what 6 months now? I expected more.
Although, I would like to see what they're top shit card is going to be like.
XTX or whatever naming scheme they're going with.

Edit: Another thing we can count on is ATi driver dev, which is FAR superior to Nivdia's.

Ninja edit:
“A day late and a dollar short.” Cliché but accurate. The Radeon HD 2900 XT is late to the party and unfortunately is bringing with it performance that cannot compete. The GeForce 8800 GTS 640 MB is $50 cheaper, performs better, and draws a lot less power than the 2900 XT.

This is as good as it is going to get for a while from ATI. The GeForce 8800 GTX will still dominate at the high end of the video card market. Of course we do not know about DX10 games yet, and there is no way to make any predictions how that comparison will turn out. As it stands right now the Radeon HD 2900 XT, in our opinion, is a flop. ATI needs to get its act together quickly. It needs to push out the mainstream cards soon and it needs to deliver a high end card that can actually compete at the high end of the market."

Where'd you get a 7600GT for $88? Is this AGP or PCI-E?
