2mp won't be a problem, entry level cameras now are 5mp+...

How much do you want to spend, how complicated of a camera do you need, what size are you looking for, big zoom, IS, Point and shoot, DSLR??

I would recommend starting with Canon, Nikon, and Sony as the top three brand choices IMO, but Panasonic and several others have some very nice models. I use a Sony H5 for a point and shoot, and its a very versatile package and can take some amazing shots for a point and shoot. I'm going to be adding a DSLR soon because I've pushed this camera to the limit on several occasion and found my self wanting more...

Pick up something with a nice size lens. They sell the ones with the smaller lenses (maybe 1/2" across) that will fit nicely in a pocket, but the photo quality isnt all that great relatively no matter how many Mp it is, just because it wont take in enough light. Stick with Nikon, Olympus or Cannon, possibly Sony. DO NOT buy Kodak or Fuji. They have tons of problems. 5.1Mp is a good benchmark, but I'd say try to find something in the 7.x range.
