Slingbox FTW!

This thing ROCKS!!!.. they wanted to charge more for a cable drop in my Computer room then the slingbox costs. so i picked one up.. pretty easy setup.. besides it not liking my home made 50' cat 5 cable.. once it was up and running though.. smoooth as gravy.. FULL controll over my Satalite box. and the best part is. now i can watch TV from work

it was a bad run of cable.. the REal long one would drop 50% of the pings across it. It was in cat 5 spec for length, but i think it was just "bad".

i hooked my laptop up through it and it linked, but was seeing serious signal degridation.

I looked through the site, but maybe I missed it, do you have to pay a monthly fee for this? I was thinking about just getting this, and running it to my lcd, instead of paying to have another line put in upstairs, plus upgrading to hd, which would be a better idea? (probably a stupid question, I just don't know)

No monthly fee. It records to a pc and then streams back to whatever you have the Slingbox client on.

If I remember right it has some good ties to Media Center.

it doesnt record anything to a PC. it streams from the slingbox direc to the sling box client. the only PC involved is the one that has the client on it.

I see, do you think it would be worth it to add another box, and rune the line, or just buy this?

It does both depending on your setup, I didn't elaborate enough sorry. If you use a Media Center PC to record your shows you can stream them back through your Slingbox. If you have a DVR it can stream back from you DVR. Or you can just stream live programming. So technically it does not record to your PC but you can schedule recording through it just like you can control your DVR/sat box.

yeah but that setup has nothing to do with the sling box operation

the slingbox wont controll a PC or a media center unless the Media center's IR controll mimics one of the recognised devices.

as to would i get another box or a sling box? depends.. i got one so that i can watch tv anywhere in my house, on the road or at work. Since my computer room doesnt have a sAT drop, i didnt want to put one in so i use the slingbox there. Personally, if you just need another cable box, the sling box isnt what you are looking for.

make sure you get the model you need. Most ppl here will need the A/V or Pro.
