Angry Trouble running Battlefield 2

So I finally got around to buying BF2 (didn't want to bother with 2142 because of system requirements) and installed it the other day. I don't normally spend a lot of money on games and I tend to buy a game and play it for a long time (I still play Black Hawk Down and C&C Generals LOL!).

Installed the program and installed Direct X 9. Install took a while and I had to reboot the computer. Booted back up and tried to launch the program and it told me I had to insert Disk 1 (I still had Disk 3 in the drive from the install). Program comes up briefly and closes and nothing after that. Rebooted and tried again, same thing. Ran MSCONFIG > Startup and disabled everything and rebooted just to make sure nothing was interfering with it and same thing happened when I tried to launch the program.

I tried removing BF2 from Add/Remove Programs and reinstalling it (although I didn't manually delete the folder which I should have) and still having the same problem.

Computer is a 4 year old HP 854n. It's got all of the latest patches and service packs. I've upgraded the RAM from the original 512 MB to 1 GB. What I'm wondering is if my computer is up to snuff. What do you guys think the problem may be?
  • Intel 2.53 GHz Pentium 4 processor
  • 8 KB data cache, 12 KB micro-op trace cache
  • 512 KB secondary-level cache
  • 533 MHz frontside bus
  • 1 GB MB DDR RAM
  • 2100 MB per second memory speed
  • 120 GB ultra DMA hard drive
  • Nvidia GeForce 4 MX440 graphics with 128 MB DDR memory and TV output

I would think that without the patches the program would at least open. I am thinking it's some kind of video driver problem myself or a conflict with the driver. I'll check when I get home. Thanks for the response man.

It sounds like your video card. Make sure that the drivers and game patches are up to date.

Here is my current video driver.

Tried updating the driver from the Device Manager but didn't come up with anything newer. I did a Google search and found one place that appeared to have new drivers but no download link (0 Bytes)

Are those generic Nvidia drivers or is there one specific to my card?

The Omega drivers cover card families just like the nVidia downloads, essentially you download all the drivers and only use the one specific to your card.

You can also try going to HP and looking in the drivers dowload section for updated drivers for your machine. They should be keeping an up to date repository but being 4 years old they may not anymore.

Its your card.

If you can't count on the game developers, you can count on the community. Some faithful programmers have created a work in progress shader modification that gets the older cards to work. Download it and give it a try but remember this is far from finished and currently looks poor because all the shaders have not been converted yet. But it does give owners of "obsolete" video cards some hope.

Well I'm thinking my cheapest option at this point is to upgrade my video card. Any recommendations on a cheap AGP video card that is supported that I can pick up at Fry's this afternoon?

I'm just thinking more and more I need to just get a new computer. If I upgrade the card I may need to upgrade the power supply and keep going from there.

Word.... I've replaced the following items just to play this damn game:

Video card - 7800GS AGP <---- Open Box Sale at Fry's $180

Up to 2Gig RAM now

New DVD drive, "mine sucked from the factory"

Now... After i've bought all this, i'm realizing that i don't have NEAR enough power to pull it. Vid card reccomends 300 watt minimum, and i'm sittin on a factory 250 watt.

It seems like it never ends, but it's SO WORTH IT when it's right.

Holla at me on xfire when you get it running, "Sneaky_01". I'll take you for a ride in the Super Cobra that you won't soon forget.

yeah, plus you would be looking at an AGP card not pci-express.

I've got a 9700pro (AGP) which has always been a good performer and it runs BF2 great. Even at 1680x1050 it runs smooth. You can pick this card up for ~$80 on ebay.

I've been considering building a new system, but don't want to spend the money.

Minimum graphics card requirement is a 5200FX 128. And that is like playing pong, all graphics stripped to bare minimum, res. at 800x600

I run an ATI x1600 512MB with 1.50 gb of ram combined with an AMD 64 3400+ and it runs slippery smooth like KY Lube.

And dont bother with 2142...BF2 mods make it different and they are free.

I had a 1.5 ghz machine that played the game fine with a gig of DDR RAM but I had to use a 256MB AGP card. I tried it with a cheap ass card and it did exactly what yours did, Jose.

Diamond makes a fairly cheap 512 MB AGP card that Fry's sells. My 1.5 ghz machine (it was 400 FSB if I remember right) couldn't handle it but I bet yours could.

Thanks Alan. I'll check it out today. If it's not to expensive I may pick it up today. Otherwise I'll be looking into a new machine soon.
