Best flat screen monitor under $250?

I've been looking at flat screens in Fry's ads for a few weeks now. I'd like something around 19". The two brands that seem to fit my price range are Samsung and Viewsonic. I don't know too much about monitors except that you want a lower response time and higher contrast. Is there anything else important to know? Any brand or model I should look at or stay away from?

Samsung and Viewsonic are great.

They are noramally higher priced than the no names, so if they fit in your budget go get one. It seemed like the prices were dropping everyday, now it seems they have hit a plateau.

Samsung makes the best Flat Screen monitor on the market with NEC and Viewsonic right behind them. NEC has the optibright screens which are very nice to look at but if you have any lighting in your room/office you will get some glare. Stay away from any third party/off brand monitors, while they might tout some nice specs they are usually false specs and they don't last as long. As far as specs go you will want the response time to be around 5ms (there are lower but you will not see the difference) and the contrast ratio to be 500:1 or better (but again, at a certain point you really don't notice the difference).
My personal preference is to go with a widescreen, I was a little skeptical at first until I bought one, now I can't see how I used to do any gaming without one. I went with the viewsonic monitor mainly because of cost and specs, this is the model that I got: Viewsonic va1930wm , I paid 239.99 -50mir.

I haven't really looked at widescreens because I figure they'd distort the games I play or the programs I run. Is this not true?

most of the games out there support wide screen now, and the ones that don't you can "force" them to run at a specific resolution. You could get a dell ultrasharp 19" for your price range, which are really nice. I have the dell 20" widescreen and its awesome! If you find a promo code for dell you can get some really good deals.

Also I would for the most part ignore the specs that the manufactures provide. There isn't any standard across manufactures for measuring them so they tend to be "inflated". An example of this is the dell 20" widescreen, it uses the exact same LCD panel as the apple 20", yet they have different numbers...

I play WoW and a couple of other shooters and I have not had any distortion at all!!! As far as running apps it increases your overall desktop space and allows you to be able to view multiple apps at the same time without distorting it.

I have two of these 17" Samsungs.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1149205183890

They also make a 19" version for like $20 more. It has a 2ms response time which is great for gaming. It looks great. Only downside is that you can't adjust the monitor up and down, it only has tilt, it's just the right height for me so that wasn't a concern. Also some lcd panels have light that leaks out casing in the back and projects light on your wall or desk, that kinda bothers me but this monitor doesn't do that at all.

How distorted will older games look on a widescreen? The games I play are like 5 years old (obviously not up to date on games). Will these look all f'ed up or can I adjust it enough to make it look good?

I bought a 19" Samsung for $250 with $50 off. It's probably not the best in the world but it was cheap and looked good at Fry's.

I see that you bought one. But for those interested in a great non-widescreen at a good price:

Optibrights are shit. They glare like a motherfucker, and they burn up fast too. With the 500 nit brightness or more, those screens basically self-destruct. When I worked at Fry's literally 2 out of every 3 NEC's we sold had a bad pixel right out of the box, which soon became the column, and then a row, both crossing the original bad pixel, and spreading out from that point on.

Samsung is the best though, and Viewsonic's kick ass too, but they try to make their products to be easily confused with one another.

I've got a 19", 4ms, 650:1, SOYO I got for $169 out the door, no MIRs or anything. Regular price. Kick ass monitor, and has one of the best GUIs I've ever seen for a monitor.

IIRC, Gateway monitors are actually Samsung-manufactured units.
