Increasing Wi-Fi range on a laptop?

I'm planning on spending a week at a rental house on the beach this spring and last time I was there I was leaching a weak Wi-Fi signal from someone near by. I was wondering if there was a way to improve the signal to my Laptop. Any ideas on this?

Is there a repeater I can buy that takes an external (upgraded) antenna thereby boosting the Wi-Fi range?

I was wondering the same thing. I was waiting for my girlfriend to get out of class last night in my car. I had the laptop with me and for about 2 mins I had a very weak signal and got on the internet. By the time i brought up dfwstangs the signal was lost and I drove around the parking lot looking for it again. lol.

Either getting a new card with an extneral adapter, or if you really want to be cool....

buy a wrt54gl linksys router and flash it over to openwrt or seavsoft.

You can make the router do CRAZY shit. iptables, scan, cap packets, everything.

you can make it leach their wireless internet and then you can plug computers in the switch in the back. It is also very portable and has VERY good signal range.

For my "driving" purposes I use...

http://www.saveateagle.com/proxwir84841.html

or

http://www.amazon.com/Orinoco-Gold-8.../dp/B00006BA7X

Both have external connectors were you can hook up other types of antennas. I have two I use, one that is 12db and another that is 6db. both mag so they can stick to the roof of the car.

This is for my MacBook which has a built in 802.11g wireless card but no external card.

I've heard about those Linksys routers. Might have to pick up one to play with.

Here is what Hunt4m3x is talking about.

http://www.hackaday.com/2005/08/23/h...wifi-repeater/

I read about this a while back and have been wanting to set something up and keep it handy for whenever I'm traveling and need some Wi-Fi

Unfortunately this isn't supported on the Mac OS (yet). I like the fact that it's USB since I do not have a PCMCIA card and it has an external antenna that appears to be directional somewhat.

It only makes it an extender right? I have a linksys wireless extender in my house. I could just plug it in to my inverter in my car and it might pick it up?(get better signal than my laptop card)

I've been using this card in my laptop for almost a year and I will say without ANY doubt...it is the best PCMCIA wireless card I have ever found. I bought the card from that seller and it came with the antenna to mount on the roof of a truck, or you can use it inside a house and mount the antenna outside if your close to a window. I also bought the same antenna for my desktop and bought a 10 ft. extension cord so I could mount the antenna outside. That antenna and card combo will pull in so many weak usable wi-fi signals that you would be shocked.
If you doubt it then meet up with me somewhere and I will prove it.

I was at office depot the other day to get some stuff, and saw a usb type antenna to increase range, might be worth a try.

cisco makes an ap that will act as a repeater and you can put your own antennas on it. i think it goes up to 100mw, with the right antennas you'll be good to go
