Activating windows...

Well, my computer took a poo on me and I had to re-format.

I didn't have a Windows CD so my buddy let me use his. Everything went well with the install, but it says the serial was used too many times.

Is calling Microsoft an option? Do I have any options with this

Does your comp have a serial on the case somewhere?

You can call MS but that is piracy so they won't help at all. You need a valid CD Key , the one you are using is not legal to be installed on multiple systems, and then to go into the registry and change the key it is using.

it depends on the type of license you have.

software like windows xp makes a snapshot of your installed hardware and sends that information at the time of activation/registration.

if you grab the same disc and stick it in another machine it's not going to work.

Running XP unpatched is a very bad idea. I wouldn't store anything of consequence on it or access any personal data on that for sure.

the copy of XP pro that I bought through school for $7 has been installed on probally 5 different machines... If it ask me to call microsoft, I just tell them that I upgraded hardware and reinstalled and they give me the code to unlock it.

I've only had to do that twice, after doing a reinstall.

Just call them, some dude in India could give two shits if you are stealing software from his oppressor. They'll ask if you've used it on another machine but that's it.

you can call them a few times, but eventually they will say no.

Best bet is to tell them "my machine crashed, i replaced the hard drive and motherboard, and reinstalled from scratch. Yes this is the only machine it is installed on."

Should be good to go
