How to transfer dvds to ipod

How can I transfer my dvds to my ipod? I am new to this but would like to get these on my ipod. And I downloaded some shows off the internet and can't figure out how to get those to my ipod either.

I have tried this with my cousins IPOD video and I was unable to do it. You have to d.l some type of software that will convert it over to mp4 format I believe. I found one peice of software buy it left a watermark in the middle of the screen.

You have to save it to iTunes, and it has to be in AAC Video format and then just select it to go on your iPod like you would your music and update your iPod.

I'm not computer literate at all, but I have been told you need some way to undo the encryption on a DVD before you can actually put it into Ipod format. I may be wrong, but a guy at work has put about 10 movies onto a disk and has formatted them over for me, so all I have to do is put the disk in the computer and they got straight over to Itunes.

Why not just download it already ripped? It's a 1.37gb file, much easier to work with. Then you can convert to whatever format you want. Either way is highly illegal btw.

If any of you guys are on a Mac you can use Handbrake to rip your DVD's into the proper (MP4) format and you can adjust the rip for a specific file size or aspect ratio. Lots of features and it's free. I've heard that they are making a Windows version to so you might Google it and see what you come up with.

Definitely recommend Handbrake if you're using a Mac. http://handbrake.m0k.org/

On Windows, I use Videora iPod Converter: http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/

This just converts movies/videos though. You first have to rip them, and encode them. For something like that, I suggest Gordian Knot: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gordianknot ... here's a tutorial: http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/gknot-main4.htm

The people at the Apple Store can't tell you how to do something that is against the copyright of the DVD.

Handbrake has worked great on the mac. They now have a windows version of it to. Just go into the picture size and make it 640x (it will change the other size itself based on the movie). When the file is done drop it into iTunes and your done.

Looks like Handbrake has a decent gui for Windows now as well, so it should be about as usable as the OSX version.

http://handbrake.m0k.org/

Suggested settings for making iPod rips is to set the encoder to h.264 (iPod) (default is just h.264), audio set to AAC (default), file extension .mp4 (default is .avi), for the rest just follow this guide: http://plaxic.googlepages.com/DVD2iPodGuide.pdf

By default it does 1 pass encoding, which will complete a rip/encode about as fast as watching the movie (pretty much keeps your system pegged at 100% though, so don't expect to be doing anything else while doing this). You can check 2 pass encoding, and IMO you'll get better results with this, based on my experience with xvid encoding. Though perhaps h.264 is better at single pass encoding, I just haven't worked with it enough yet. 2 pass will take about twice as long as watching the movie to encode (and again will keep your system pegged at 100%)

This is pretty much a single step process. Once you're finished with the rip/encode in Handbrake, the video is ready to import into iTunes and load onto your iPod (no extra step of converting the video to an iPod compatible format)
