DirecTV Tivo system OS6.2 questions

Anyone every hack an older model DirecTV Tivo unit?

I think mine is the RCA DVR40, Looks like there is a way out ther to put in a bigger drive, upgrade to the latest 6.2 OS version, and enable the USB ports, etc. Anyone have any experience with this?

I might be giving it a shot tonight.

I don't have a home phone, so my DVR/Tivo service is practically worthless right now.

I have an RCA DVR40, hacked to my liking. Just troll around http://dealdatabase.com/forum/ for a bit, you'll get everything you need to know. In case you haven't done it before, yank the drive (I suggest keeping the original as a golden original, just in case), slap in a monte'd kernel (I can send you a link to one I patched, so it's good to go as-is), stick on an ftp and telnet daemon, and mod the firewall start script. Then everything else can be done remotely (t/vserver, tivoweb, etc).

so you've had good luck.

I need to go pickup a new HD, then i'm all ready to go. I've got all the instructions, and checked out a few cool things. I just hope my netgear USB wireless adapter will work, if not, i guess i'll go pick up a gaming adapter.

I bought the Linksys USB200M (I believe that's the model), since it's well supported by the generic pegasus drivers that are readily availabl for the Tivo.

I have one of these. How does it get updates once you hack it?

Same way it always does. Most DirecTV updates are pushed via satellite, the phone call initiates this.

As for the Tivo updates, it will get them via your home network, once you hack it to use the usb, or rj45 port.

Service updates are via the satellite and are automatic, it's the Tivo upgrade slices that get initiated by phone (but still downloaded via satellite). Once hacked, you run fakecall via cron so it never dials into the mothership.

surprisingly, the generic Airlink at Fry's works like a charm for a WIRED solution. tried the linksys(both version w/CD pic and without) to no avail, pick up cheapo brand and voila.

I have a spare Tivo wireless adapter if anybody needs it.

Did you manually add in ethernet and usb drivers? DirecTV doesn't make the ports hot, nor does it include the ethernet drivers. You have to bring those to the table yourself.

Yes it does, that's actually what I have, I thought I had the 40.

You can upgrade hard drive size, etc...

I guess I need to look into the drivers then, DLinkOZ, I just used ptvnet, and instacake-dvr80 image. Any help with the wireless setup/drivers, etc... would be appreciated. I thought the wireless did not work with DirecTivo boxes, but I don't know a ton.

I added in the option for the USB 2.0 drivers. But there wasn't an option in the instacake version for wireless/drivers

i'll find the site I used.

The benefits for me were, enabling the network, I don't have a home phone for dial up to obtain the DVR schedule updates. Also with the ftp and telnet client installed, you can retrieve your saved shows, and then copy them and convert them on your pc, then burn to dvd. Also they have a hacked version of the TivoWeb, where you can setup your recordings via the internet/web browser, among many other little hacks

the TivoWeb would be pretty sweet.

http://tivowebplus.sourceforge.net/

I couldn't live without it. Bring up the site on my laptop off to the side of my desk, and within the user interface section (mimicks the onscreen menus) you can go into your Now Showing list. Next to each show is a link labeled "View". Clicking that will stream the show into WMP in real time, without the need to download to the hd first.

Kernel sanity checks are performed via hardware now, so you have to socket the eprom to hack it.
