How do I reformat over XP and install Win2k?

My son's laptop is screwed with spy ware and crap. It's running XP. All we have right now is Windows 2000. No XP install CD. How do we reformat XP and install 2K over it?

You should be able to out the win2k disk in and it "should prompt you to do a clean install. Only thing is that you will lose all the stuff on the computer, like files and what not.

When you install 2000 it will format the drive. Just choose the Delete existing partion and then create a new one. Install 2k on you new partition.

If I do that, I'll just buy Win XP. I'm trying to do with what I have right now.

The disk should be bootable. Did you enable the boot from CD in the BIOS?

Yea. Even set it to boot from the CD only. It said the disk wasn't bootable. I thought all Win2k discs were bootable. Isn't that the only way to install it? Or can you be running Win98 then run setup.exe from a Win2k CD?

I'll try again in a few. I appreciate the suggestions.

Is that disk a recovery CD?

Does your laptop have a XP sticker on it? If it does, the code is on the sticker, to install XP on it again.

Yea! I found a sticker on the bottom with the product key. So all I need is an install CD, right?

It says XP Home.

So I just need an install disk and the activation code that's on the sticker?

I got an XP Home CD and used the activation key on the sticker. Now it says the CD Key is not valid. Ugh! I checked it 4-5 times over to make sure I didn't key it in wrong.

I called Microsoft and they told me I have to call Dell. Bastards! I was surprised that I got a human within a couple of minutes tho.

Yea, but I think I need an activation key that will work. The one on the Windows XP Home sticker on the bottom of the laptop won't. Or did it not work because of the CD I had? It was XP Home and that's what it says on the sticker too.

Did you have XP on there before? If so sometime when you reload the software you can call microsoft and they will give you a different code(aas long as your orig copy was legit)

I did. They said call Dell. I'll try them again. Maybe I'll get a tech that knows what's going on this time.
