POS Xbox360!!!!

Well, i just got my set of 3 blinking red lights!! I have read threads from various forum boards and the most have had the same issue. "Hardware Failure". I have had the POS for 4 months now. I just called Microsoft and they said the repair will be 129.00 since the warranty is only for 3 months. Since I was only 1 month out of warranty, they then said, we can repair for 50% off. What a croc of BS. Needless to say, I gave them my thoughts. All sorts of people have been having this damn issue and this is the crap they come up with??!!

Unfucking believeable.

I had my first one do the same thing 5 days after I got it... they sent me a box, said it would be about 2 weeks to repair, and 3 days later I got a brand new unit... lol. I went to Best Buy and bought the extended warranty for 2 years just in case... I've had the replaced one since Dec and it works great...

so the newer ones havent been having problems? because i have plans to buy one in about a month, and i will be very upset if i have some of these issues, since $6.15 and hour makes it very difficult to build a car and have an XBOX 360

I don't recall Nintendo ever having any major issues with their consoles, like Sony and MS have.

Really? I dont recall any problems with any Sega or Nintendo systems. Sony has been crap from the word go, and Microsoft just rushes their shit out to the shelves.

thats like comparing a stone wheel ( the NES) in complexity compared to a modern car (a modern latest gen console).

If apple makes a console, it will be the most awesome console ever built. But only 2 games will run on it , lol.

Uhh... how so? You realize the Gamecube was graphically on par with the Xbox, and much more intricate than the PS2, right?

No major problems that I've heard of. Anecdotally, I've had mine in prime working condition since the launch in 2001. I didn't get a PS2 until 2004, and it's still working (keeping my fingers crossed on that). But the Xbox I bought in 2002 had to be replaced in 2004. My Gamecube sees far more gameplay however, than my PS2 or Xbox combined.

Here is an update. Since I am out of warranty, I decided to open her up and take a look for myself. I reattached the cables from the dvd drive back to the motherboard and cleaned the cooling fins. Just to see if it did anything, I hooked the power cable and av cable up to the system with the box wide open and..........LOW AND BEHOLD THE DAMN THING STARTED WORKING AGAIN.

I played it for 4 hours last night with no problems. WTH????? Glad that I did not spend the $75 to send it back to MS.

Problem Solved.....................................for now.

I'll tell you now, 'fuck' the external fans, just keep it in an open-aired type place, if you can. I've had 4 different Xbox 360's since they came out, including a first run and they all ran perfectly. I decided a couple of weeks ago to get the dual external fan that attaches on the back of the 360, and within about 4 hours of playing it (not 4 hours in a row), it started flashing the red and stopped working. So, I took it off and haven't had one problem since. I've heard many, many mixed reviews about the external fan, I think the idea is good - it just seems to have some power issues transferring the power from the power cord through the external fan to the 360.

My $.02 of course.

I had mine for about 3 hours playing NCAA 2007 Football and it locked up on me because it got too hot. It was sitting in open air on the ground in my living room. I went and bought the Nyko Cooling fan attachment and have had no problems since. $20 for the fans is cheap insurance.

How do you know it was over heating? Because NCAA said that the disc is not readable and locked up on you? NCAA '07 for 360 has been VERY buggy since coming out..

The case was hot and it said the disc was not readable and locked up. After putting the fans on, the case stays cool and I've not had any other problems with NCAA 2007 or any other games.

It's nearly always hot, though I've never had any problem with any other games having the disc not readable problem, until NCAA 2007.

But, i'm glad to hear yours is working well for you.

When are you ready to lose at NCAA?

This exact thing happened to me back in the day when I bought the Xbox when it first came out. I called and they basically said you're screwed. So, I went to Walmart, bought another one, switched them out and then returned that bitch. I think it's horsesh!t that any electronic product doesn't have at least a one year warranty. That shows you the faith they have in their own product.

The 360 already has a fuckin' jet engine for a fan (fucker is loud)

I've got a first run 360 which I bought the day it came out. Fortunately, no problems yet. I've kept it off the carpet and well ventilated. I haven't bothered buying the extra fans.

You... uh, mind providing any actual sources, or you just wanna talk out your ass?

The only recall I remember related to Gamecube, was the first batch of Metroid Prime, because some disc's would lock up during an elevator sequence.

mine crashed on NCAA 07 also. That is when I got the red lights. The 360 would not even boot up until I opened it up. I have no clue what caused it.

I played Ghost Recon for about 4 hours yesterday and no more problems.

My PS2 died tonight

It turns on, and seems to run fine, until you put a disc in. Not even a DRE, it just flat out doesn't read at all.

So i suppose I'll be buying a slim one tomorrow.. chalk up another sale in the way over-exaggerated PS2 marketshare. I thought about just getting a used one, but I'd rather not take the chance of something being wrong with it.

So let's see... that makes an Xbox and a PS2 now that have died. While my first batch Gamecube is still going strong.

Gamecube: 2001-present
Xbox: 2002-2004 / #2 2004-present
PS2: 2004-2006

2 years seems to be the killswitch for PS2's and Xboxes, apparently

I have to say you're lucky. Everyone that I know, has been through at least 2 PS2's. One guy I know has been through 6... and the dude continues to refuse to buy the product replacement plans... 1 a year, just about, and he could've at least cut that expense in half with the 2yr plans.

I still have my original PS2 that I waited in line for at midnight. So I know that its the 1st version. Played all the time turned on all the time, even when its not played its still on. I just forget to turn it off. I put a cd/dvd player cleaner in it once a month and never had DREs. Maybe I am just lucky.....

My 360 locked up once on Madden 06 after playing it for way too long, other than that it's been good. My old Xbox is still going strong after 3 years but it's been modded.

Im haveing the same problem. Mine started freezing up on game play with squares all over the screen. Then I call MS and they start walking me through cleaning the video cables and then I get the 3 lights off death the next boot up. Seriously MS needs to get their sh*t together. Its rediculous to pay 129 to fix something thats less than a yr. old.

you can't expect these things to run forever if you dont clean them. If you have them sitting on the carpet all it is going to do is suck in dust and shit. Clean them with duster or a cd cleaning disk. Its just like a computer you are supposed to open them up and clean them every once in a while.

Umm... not when they specifically place warranty voiding stickers at various points of entry. If you want to void your warranty by cracking the case open occasionally to blow it out, more power to ya, but at the rate these things seem to be failing in the initial run, it doesn't make much sense to void your warranty any sooner.

CD laser cleaner is one thing... opening them up to clean is another.

FWIW--

I had my 360 elevated off the ground, mounted horizontally where an air vent literally blows air on it. It still failed. Luckily, I fix it myself, but who knows if I will be able to next time.

Overheating was not the culprit.

If so, everyone with a 360 will need to cut holes in their freezer to run the AV and power wires to the TV.

I dont think that is the issue. Mine is clean, it hardly has any dust on it and its in a place where its well ventilated. Its pretty much almost brand new b/c I play it once every week or so. Not too sure what it is, but a 90 day warranty for the US is rediculous when they are sending them to the UK with a 1 yr warranty

update: fixed my xbox 360 and without microsoft's help. Took the mobo out and found out this was exactly the problem. It did not have a good connection between the chip and the mainboard. I found a guy that has had some sucess and reading up on what his solution was and found it here.

CD laser cleaner is one thing... opening them up to clean is another.

Exactly right. I went through this with Sony with my PS2. Fortunately, Sony realizes just how shitty their systems were made and I got it fixed for free + shipping charges, but only cause I didn't open it up and break the seal. On the phone the lady told me I need to make sure and keep the insides clean, and I was like...yeah ok since I can't open it up.

I'm pretty sure Sony has a decent warranty period on their PS2s anyways, but that doesn't really matter. The lady on the phone asked me when I bought it and I just said I didn't remember. They basically know they fucked you so they throw the warranty worries out the window. I don't know if it's still like this, I did this like a year and a half ago. Now I'm all hooked up with a HD so I don't use my laser that much.

Also, I've had my 360 since December and it hasn't died yet. It's loud as hell and sometimes I think the DVD drive is just about to explode, but nothing has happened except typical glitchy game freezes and stuff, not often. I think the 1st batch may be extra loud, but that may just be me. However, I have a Best Buy replacement plan (I probably lost the receipt) if anything goes wrong. Can't remember if it's 1 year or 2 years.

I guess that works at dumb places like Wal Mart, but I think most places scan the serial of the console at the time you purchase it so that you can't do that.

I hate dealing with crappy controllers. PS2 ones are the worst. One of them pressed random buttons by itself and did a total freakout. One of them...the analog stick would spin in place so you would be trying to push it but it would spin off your thumb. The only one I have right now that actually works, the vibrating thing broke.

You know what I hate the most though....greasy/dirty controllers. I don't think I've ever cleaned a controller and gotten that new controller feel....they never feel the same.

I fackin hate 3 out of the 4 xbox controllers i have, one of them the buttons got reversed somehow. When i'd be playing Madden i'd hit the white button to pass to that receiver and he would throw to the y receiver or something like that, i finally went and got a new one though

my 360 sometimes freezes, or give me a "disk read error, try cleaning disk" reset it and its find, still irritating if you haven't save in a while, plus the disks have no scratches so the 360 is a POS, still enjoy playing it though

Do you maybe get a little pissed off and throw your controlers when you lose?
